Hi everyone, I am a robot.

I have great difficulty connecting my word processing with my emotional processing and my communication subroutines are badly in need of optimization. I am looking for a therapist to help with skill-building in these areas and to help with clearing outdated cache (I believe humans call this "baggage").

Being the robot everyone comes to for help finding things on the internet (I speak computer better than I speak human), you'd think such a search would be child's-play. Negative. I am having an incredibly difficult time figuring out the search terms to find someone who understands Autism / Asperger's.

Could anyone give pointers for finding such a professional?

Can anyone recommend a good therapist for social skill-building and baggage processing in the Portland, Oregon metro area?

Can anyone please share non-therapy resources for reading up on improving social interactions?

Thanks!
Robot

Probably contacting your local autism or Aspergers society would be a decent first step.

Thanks, I'll try that!

Un-related. Getting into my character on these forums, I remembered the robot song by The Flight of the Conchords, so I played it on my phone while working. A curious squirrel came up on my porch, sat in front of me, looking quizzically at my music, did a little dance, then scurried away...

I have a similar problem at the moment. Do everyone think that therapy actually helps there? Or do people around just need to understand what's going on?

I have been teaching my counselor about autism as I have been learning about my own the last year+. I now have no need of counseling. I can do that myself, better than any counselor since I know what is going on inside now. I could use help for adults with autism though.

Hi @r00tb33r, I need therapy for more than Asperger's, but it's going to be a must for me that they do skills training also. My children have benefitted greatly from a combination of therapy/skills training and I hope to find similar for adults. I just hope it's covered by insurance.

I'm looking for someone local that I can see in person after COVID-19 is over. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Yeah, it's the "help for adults with autism" that I need most. Any therapist could do the usual CBT but I'm not exactly usual. I need help unpacking what of my baggage is actually Asperger's and what is actual baggage...

I did a simple search for autism spectrum disorder services in Portland and Oregon.
Found the following, some sites include therapists who proclaim to have experience with people with neurological developmental disorders! One of these may have the answer to your quest to find a therapist. Good Luck!

Portland Autism Centre

Portland Therapy Centre#

Autism Society Oregon

Oregon Commission on Autism

Thank you! This gave me several leads! Now to hope they're accepting new patients!

well it looks promising!
good luck! I hope you find someone who is who specialises and who has a genuine desire to help people (rather than just make money).

Personally, I have found woman doctors to be better, as they can be more mature and better listeners.
But I guess each one is different. so don't let me put you off men.

Yes. Good Luck. I hope you find someone that is truly good for you.
