I have aspergers, ADHD and bipolar disorder. I have been to Special Olympics and I have never made friends in it. I also have been to mental health support and only made one friend through it and he isn't a very close friend. I hate it when people say that I should make friends in Special Olympics or Mental Health because I don't completely fit in either group. Do any of you feel like you don't fit in groups?

It has been quite an issue for me because I can start out ok, but give it a few months and I find that I either get bullied or I get ignored until I just leave. It can happen in a short time.

On groups I have had to be part of, the first few days seem to work fine for a while, but then my differences start to show and eventually I end up an outsider even though I am within a group, and if time goes on and I don't leave the bullying starts.

I generally fit in with the people I work with. Friendships at work seem to happen automatically.

But when I was at high school I couldn't seem to fit in any group. I finally found the group I should have been good for: the outcasts - but even they were too good for me, even though there must have been at least 2 or 3 undiagnosed Aspies. I think they all had social problems of some sort but they covered it up by picking on me, probably because they knew I already had a diagnosis (and people wonder why I wish I hadn't gotten diagnosed so early in life  ).

I can get along with people and even be charming but I only rarely seem to form connections.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt like I truly fit in or belong anywhere, at least not for more than a few minutes before I’m proven wrong.

So much this! At first I think things are going OK then I suddenly realise that everyone else has become friends and started socialising together and I've been left out again.

It would be easier to list groups I fit into:

I fit into my ASD support groups ---- and although I am very fond for many of them, I am not attached. I can only maintain so many relationships. I have one close friend and one sort-of close friend right now. I like people, but it's really hard to keep up with them.

I have no desire to fit into groups, and I never have.

Always. I can't even explain why. Just don't know how to do it.

I don't fit into normal social groups, that's for sure.
What's Special Olympics? It sounds very important and high-up.

I find that. I can be part of a group but then I become on the outside of a group somehow?

I don't feel that I completely fit in, anywhere. The only time I feel that I truly fit in, is when I'm with my two closest friends.

That's like asking s group of blind people, "Do you ever bump into things?"

All my life, or at least since I started noticing such things. I've always felt "outside looking in." Easily 30+ years before I even had any suspicion about autism, the world seemed like a glass room where I couldn't find the entrance, like an aquarium, like some sort of interactive tv show. Still does, really.
