If a *woman* with Asperger's and an NT man pro-create, what is the likelihood of the offspring being on the autistic spectrum? Is it any different for an Asperger's *man* and an NT woman?

I don't think they know, Light0. They're not sure of the cause yet, and without that....

I think my dad had AS and my mum is NT but 4/5 kids have some ASD.
I am AS and my children's fathers NT but both kids are NT.

depends if any of the genes involved in autism are sex linked or not...

if they are on the sex chromosomes... then the woman as a 1 in 2 change to pass down her autism chromosome (as she has two sex chromosomes) and for every child, there is a probaility of expressing that autism chromosome (if they get it).... since most abnormal conditions are recessive (generalizing)... if the kid is a girl and gets the autism X chromosome from mom, then she wont express it cause she has a good X chromosome from dad.... if the kid is a boy... then he will express the X chromosome from his mom... this is due to gender beinging genetically based: XX (female) xy male.

if any of the genes are not sexlinked... the odds are better for offspring not expressing traits found on those genes

plus it's complicated cause im sure autism is cause by a suite of genes... some which may be sex linked and some which are not.... so even NTs could be expressing "autism" genes and thus contributing to a higher probability in their offspring having the condition (flying under radar so to speak)

headache-inducing subject!

As others have stated its a complicated subject that we cant really work out the math for without more information.

However from experience with families with ASDs and a medium sized sample group (say 50 families or so) it seems like one parent having it gives a 20-50% chance and both parents having it increases the chance to 50-80%.

So it is quite hereditary but not completely.

In my family there is me with AS diagnosed / my nephew (my sister's son) with AS undiagnosed / my Cousin (my Mum's sister's son) with AS undiagnosed.

I don't know about my Mum but people used to say about her that she was very aloof and I think she may have had AS (or at least traits). My Mum's Mum was very eccentric.

My Dad is the opposite, very gregarious and sociable (a good talker).

My Dad's brother was a bit strange though.

I think the AS genes may have been on both sides of my family but mostly on my Mum's side.

What are the odds of two aspie parents having an NT kid?

I hope to God it's unlikely.

Insufficient data to give any but fuzzy answers... Which others have already done, probably better than I could.

I'm sure there's a genetic factor though; probably a strong one.

I probalby have AS. My wife is probably NT. Our son is very autistic. One random sample. Which means... nothing.

Good fortune,

There seem to be some symptoms on both sides of my family.

Hmm, lets see. My parents both displayed AS tendencies. I'm AS. I have 3 children with an NT, two of whom are AS and autistic respectively, the other a girl, younger, and as yet unknown. Many of the parents from my son's support groups are AS, or have had AS partners themselves. I have an AS partner.

I would like to think that the odds of it being genetic are quite high, given that. Give it another generation or so. Once the current crop grow up and start breeding Aspies, I reckon the thruth will out.

I have AS (undiagnosed).

My ex-wife (mother of my children) has schizophrenia (IQ=158).

Our five children seem to be relatively NT.

Our two grandsons have problems: one, I expect, has Asperger's if not out-and-out autism, had problems in school (hyperactivity), and is eidetic. His father (an MD, eidetic, alcoholic, etc., etc.) probably AS. The other grandson (different parents) has sensory integration dysfunction and will be streamed "gifted" next year. Our seven granddaughters seem OK although one may have problems (according to family hearsay).
