Were they autistic?

My dad clearly was but my mum was as NT as your going to get...

One social butterfly and one social walking disaster together.

My dad was more rainman than sheldon cooper though, just not as severe.

He lived in a world of his own. Adrian land so to speak and was far more oblivious than me when it comes to social mores and norms.

People didn't understand him...

Ha! I was thinking of starting a thread about our parents as well. Great idea!

The men on my dad's side were definitely on the spectrum although they weren't diagnosed. My dad has passed away so I'll never know for sure but I'd pretty much bet my life on it.

I always thought that my mother was NT because she's very different than I am. We are opposite in almost every way so I assumed she must be NT. I'm starting to wonder though. For example she's the type who talks nonstop about her interests, but I'm the mute type. She keeps very busy with perfectionist routines but I'm more disorganised / ADHD. She has a small repertoire of choices and doesn't vary much with anything: same foods, same restaurants, same holidays, same traditions, same clothes. She's only had two friends for years. When I think of her as ND I can relate to her a lot better without feeling like a failure.

My dad has Asperger's and my mom at least has a lot of autistic traits.

Some people feel better about their childhoods when they figure out that their parents were autistic, but I honestly don't think that them having autism makes me feel better about how I was raised, if anything it frustrates me more.

I am often considered the problem child since I am one of the more affected people in my family and they don't want to deal with it. Having people with autism treat you like that is very sh***y.

No.

Not even BAP-like.
Not even nerd like.
Not even quirky like.
Not even mental health reaction like.
Not even a hint of ND. Nothing.
Even their worst flaws and faults. Nothing.

Both my parents are do not understand me.
And both my parents are not very compatible with me, whether or not I shared similarities with them outside autism.

I cannot imagine otherwise.
And I never wished otherwise.
They love me. They accept me. I love them back. I accept them back.

Possibly my mom, there are traces of traits in a couple of uncles and my grandpa on that family line.
But who knows, neither of my parents had any friends, they weren't touchy (I don't think I ever saw them hugging), and they had their special interests; they were both very good at studying/learning new stuff, but only if the subject interested them.
They passed in 1999, so I guess I'll never know.

My parents? No. My mom, though I don't know what she has been dx'd with (she never has told me), she clearly has OCD, anorexia, and agoraphobia. I wouldn't be shocked if she's dx'd with narcissistic personality disorder either. My dad is about as neurotypical as they come, though he is a bit codependent with some enabling issues.

My grandfathers, however, are a different story. If I had been told that either of them were on the spectrum, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. I have a few cousins who have been and other who could be dx'd with autism, and a few of my cousin's children have also been given this dx. It runs in my family, it seems.

My dad has ADHD and my mom doesn't have anything mental/neurological.

We suspected that Dad had a bipolar disorder.  Whether it was the cause of or the effect from his alcoholism, we may never know.  Mom did her best to keep it all together.  They are both gone now.

My dad possibly if not autism possibly broader autism phenotype. Special interests, sensitive to noise, hated to dress up in a suit, easily thrown by change of plans. Pretty good among small groups of friends. I am strongly suspicious of his father very routine-oriented, monotone. On that side of the family, I have two diagnosed cousins.

I have no suspicions about my mom or her side of the family.

My parents are as NT as they come. My parents and I are like night and day.
