I had health insurance until I was 17, then was on the road and living on the streets until I was 43, when I became a junior in college and was able to go to the campus clinic and psychologist, (who had NO idea what the hell was wrong with me, by the way!) This was pretty basic coverage, and no hospitalization, etc.
After graduation, I didn't have medical attention until I got a job in the DOTCOM industry and had actual group medical insurance through my employer at age 47 for two years. After my job moved to India, I didn't have medical insurance again until last year at age 56 another group policy through an employer. In the state where I reside I can have the same plan for more money if I don't have a job anymore, but no job, no money for premiums so it is not that I am denied insurance, it just means I can't have it because I can't afford it. (HA!) So they are not denying me treatment, (as it was explained to me) they are only denying me coverage.
Of course, Autism/Asperger's Syndrome is not covered under any health insurance. CoMorbids are, but you have to keep the A/AS out of it, or it is considered the 'cause' of the CoMorbids and not covered.
So, all in all, my medical needs are pretty hit and miss. I have a few long term issues (sleep apnea/hypopnea, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, PTSD) that go untreated or unmonitored for years sometimes. (like when I was on health insurance I was started on Celexa for depression, lost my insurance and had to move, I was unmonitored begging scripts from low income clinics for 3 years until I just cold turkey stopped the medication on my own. It took me 18 months before I could get myself back together to get a decent job again after that! I could tell you how I lived, etc, but you didn't ask for that information, Alex.)
