(Yes i know I'm 14, but please don't comment "why are you trick or treating if you're 14?" I'm still young enough, in my opinion)
Trick or treating is kind of a nightmare for me. Not that much, but I always end up crying at least once, because it's really stressful. You have to go up to all these random people's houses and talk to them all. I may be autistic, so it's extremely stressful for me and I end up seeming rude according to my mom. I usually end up enjoying it eventually, but I need some tips.
Okay, so does anyone know how to just not do the whole "no eye contact angry face I'm an ungrateful kid"? What I mean is, I'm supposed to go like "TRICK OR TREAT!! !" in a super excited voice, but I can never talk first. My autism always tries to control me when I'm in public. I can't just smile and be normal. Sometimes I don't even remember to say thank you, or mumble it.
Also, I'm more anxious this year, because I didn't go last year due to covid-19. So idk if things will be different?
Another thing is, I'm very sensitive to loud noises, and some people's decorations make me panic. I guess that's the point, but it's still kind of painful when they're super loud.
I could just not go, but that's kind of not what I want to do. I'm dressing up as my special interest and I really want people to see it so I can inform them about it.

I'm so sorry rambling so much. Basically I just want some advice on how to act friendly (seems impossible). Also, how can I reply to comments? Been wondering how I can reply to people on here.

Couldn't you wear a mask, as in a Halloween mask, so that your face is covered? You might feel more relaxed under a mask and more able to speak maybe?

Also do you go trick-or-treating on your own or with friends? If you don't, then couldn't you get your mum to go with you? Then she could say "trick-or-treat?" for you if you find it too hard.

Oh and to reply to posts press the blue "post reply" button. Then when you finish typing your reply, press the green "submit" button, under where the smilies/emoticons are.

Yep. A mask would hide your facial expression.

Just say “trick or treat” like the other kids….or say it WITH the other kids.

And say “thank you” after you get the candy.

Who are you going as?

Welcome to WP!

First of all, you are not too old for trick or treating. I know plenty of young teens who trick or treat.
Second, You can do it nonverbally. Make a cute card that you can show people. You can write on it, "I am nonverbal-Trick or Treat! Thank you!" And that would be perfect. Everyone is aware that there are Autistic children that might be trick or treating and everyone is aware that some of them might be nonverbal. If your mom has any issue with that, explain to her that the verbal aspect causes too much anxiety. If she has any questions about that she can come here and we will talk to her.

If you're trick or treating with several friends, people don't generally notice whether each person specifically said "trick or treat!" If several people say it simultaneously, and you move your mouth at the same time, they'll assume you said it too.

I used to trick or treat every year. I’m still here to write this.

Wear gloves

There is no reason why you have to go trick or treating, especially if your reaction is the way your post sounds.

Do you have good noise cancelling headphones? If you don't, I have a pair that I love and highly recommend. I got them on Amazon. I will look them up for you.

I think she actually wants to go because there are parts of trick or treating that she loves. She is trying to figure out how to handle the parts that are difficult for her.

Update: I decided to go, and just got back! I really liked the suggestion of having cards to hold instead of talking, and I did that! Everyone thought it was cute and funny. Some of the noises were overwhelming, but we left when it got too crowded and loud. Thank you for the suggestions, it really helped!

I thought at first that by trying not to die the op meant trying not to get run over by cars, which I find hard enough when trying to cross streets in broad daylight. I think wearing bright or reflective colors just makes it easier for the drivers to target you. Deep down they all want to secretly run over pedestrians because walking everywhere is just so uncool.
