what makes meetups successful

I was wondering what the factors are that makes meetups for people on the spectrum successful.

Does anyone have some experience with meetups, I'd be curious to know your opinion.

There's a meetup in Worcester,England.
It is successful as they were using a house, but now have moved into a larger building.

It's quite informal, people just turn up and they are introduced to everyone..then kind of 'thrown to the wolves' by leaving them to fend for themselves after that.
