is it appropriate to wear autism shirt or is that a dis?

depends on who is looking, they are very popular in some places, all styles and logos.. and frowned on by others. You will have to choose for yourself. I have considered getting a T that simply says "autism" and nothing else. Let them ask if they have questions.

People might wonder whether you are on the Spectrum or are trying to be supportive of those who are. And, based upon your first post, I'm unclear which would be correct.

And is it possible that, rather than Autism, you might be surprised with a different diagnosis if you got a formal assessment? Some other Autism traits also occur in other "disorders".

i dont know , was wild so ADHD but all a doctor said i have autistic tendencies i don't know what that means..?

I don't wear an autism t-shirt myself. If it was to advertise that I've got ASD, I wouldn't want to bring it to people's attention indiscriminately, and if it's to raise autism awareness, somehow I don't think any change I could make would be worth the trouble. But I wouldn't call it inappropriate - if somebody wants to wear such a thing, I don't mind. It might make sense if the individual was in some place where a lot of the people around were very caring and curious about messages on clothing.

Well, I would say: don't wear it if you can't stand telling everyone that you have the diagnosis.

When I first began reading about Autism I discovered, much to my surprise, that it seemed to be describing me. To get an "outside" opinion I asked my bride to read about Autism; she did and agreed that it seemed to fit me...and she noticed she also had a number of Autism traits.

She is clearly ADHD and in my reading about Autism I learned that the "strong" end of ADHD (where she is) shared some traits with the "mild" end of Autism (where I am). I found some things online comparing and contrasting Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD and, after reviewing them, she decided to stick with ADHD and leave Autism for me.

It is possible to have both ADHD and Autism but the overlap of symptoms makes it confusing. That's why we get to amuse the professionals who do the formal assessments. (Well, I don't know if we all amuse all of the professionals but I do know I amused the psychologist who assessed me...and I admit her amusement was fair.)

I have several autism shirts, but I wear them only to autism events; would never wear one in public. I might wear the "Not Neurotypical; Thank Goodness" one in public (at gym one time, at meet-up at diner with other autistics), but the "Autism" ones -- I'm too chicken to wear those outside the context of autism events.

While we're on this topic, I want to vent about somthing: It really bugs me that the autism color scheme is the same as the LGBQT scheme. If I wear my spectrum leggings to the gym, people are more likely to think I'm into LGBQT (which I'm not). My niece knows my diagnosis yet thought my leggings represented "pride."

I like the idea of wearing spectrum leggings because they might make people think, "Hmmm, is she on the spectrum?" They could be a conversation starter, a subtle hint that I'm an Autie. But wearing an Autism tee shirt? That's too direct for me in a general environment. It could even influence how I'm treated by service professionals in a negative way.

I would rather a stranger know I'm queer than know I am autistic. Maybe that's because of the environments in which I circulate. In academia people's view of my value in part has to do with their view of my intelligence. It's wrong, of course, but that is the view of many people. University campuses are also typically more progressive, so maybe it's safer to be out about my sexuality here.

Regardless of the context, at least no one will ever start slow-talking to me if I tell them I find Dua Lipa attractive.

I got a compliment this evening at the gym on my spectrum leggings by a total stranger. I thanked him, and that was that.

But...I wonder if he thought they were to symbolize "pride," since they were composed of horizontal stripes from top to bottom, representing all colors of the spectrum. Or....did he suppose that maybe autism has affected my life somehow, maybe that I had an autistic kid?

I would've answered him truthfully had he asked, that I was the autistic one. But, nothing more came of the interaction.
