I want to find out what noises affect others here, how noises make you feel, how you deal with noise that causes you distress?
I myself, find a lot of noises very distressing, especially the noise of buses, people laughing loudly, groups of people talking, clocks ticking, things squeaking, road drilling, vaccuum cleaners and many others.
If there is a noise that I cannot locate the source of so I can stop it, I end up getting very upset and angry and spend hours trying to find what is causing the noise. Is anyone else like that?
Unaudible noises really irritate me, like if someone puts the radio on and it's on a low volume so it's not understandable but you can still hear it. Argh!
Repetitive beeping or the cat scratching at the window to get in are really annoying too, but surely that's the whole point of them
I HATE high-pitched noise! Everything electronic makes this little sound that just drives me CRAZY sometimes! When I can't deal with it then I'll listen to calming songs on my i-pod (Loud enough that I can't hear that little background noise the i-pod makes by itself) or just play a song in my head (As in, imagining the song is playing) so screaming loud that I can ignore other things. And if nothing works? Then I just shut my senses down. Don't know how I do it, but sometimes it all just seems to go kind of dead.
Don't know if any of that will help you, but those are my best defences .

Any noise that hit's 4KHz, that's the only frequency on the sound spectrum that pisses me off to no end. It distorts in my ears. But anything higher then 4KHz is fine, so that's odd...
noises I can't see where they're coming from or what's making the noise.
Squeaks
rattling
stuff sliding from side to side in a car when you turn corners
wipers that make noise
GM and Chrysler made cars that have 6 cylinder engines with no muffler system.
Ground buzzing
people talking
sirens
My tinnitus.

Oh the joys of noise... Meh. I hear that electric 'sqeeeeeeeeeee', but my ears always ring (it is really less of a ring and more like millions of cicadas or static) so that just blends in to the other for me. It only aggravates me when I am stressed. It then becomes one more annoyance... The things that really bug me are any sudden sounds that I am not expecting. My husband has this stupid iphone... For awhile I thought I was going to have to break that thing because he would get twitter text messages on it, one every five minutes or so and his phone would 'gong'. It is like my head gets a small electric shock every time that thing gongs. Me and that phone were going to have it out... He finally made it stop. But I am like that with so many things... each time the phone rings, when someone busts out laughing, when a chair slides across a floor without carpet, when a show pauses and a commercial bursts on, when someone clanks a spoon in their coffee cup... The list goes on and on. But it hurts me and stuns me for a few seconds. I need to 'reboot' after sudden sounds. It is like my body stops for a moment. I have been known to tear up my house in a rage looking for the source of the mysterious sound... I killed a pocket watch last year... One of my kids had this timer thing that died on one of my rampages as well... that thing beeped every five minutes for a day and half before I found it in a purse in the bottom of a bin in my basement. How that thing started up is beyond me. Oh it made me nuts. Yeah, I feel you on the noise thing.
I do not have any helpful solutions as of yet... My way of dealing with these things has been to avoid them. I have not much left my house over the past four or five years now. Heh. I hide and play the same music over and over, loudly, in attempts to drown out everything else. That is what I have done. I now find myself having to find a solution to this as well... one that is more functional than hiding, I should say. If I find anything that works for me, I will let you know. I have to find something... I seem to be getting worse the older I get...

I cover my ears. I don't even bring ear plugs with because I don't run into this often. But when I am tired, I am more sensitive. I just cover my ears knowing the noise won't last long. It's rare for me to be in situations where the noise never stops and that be in sport bars but I don't go to them. I don't go to bars either. Rare for me to go to concerts. The last one was Weird Al and I forgot my ear plugs so I used toilet paper.
I can't stand the sound of water dripping so I fix it by making it stop. Sometimes high pitch sounds from TVs bother me so I turn it off. But it's torture when I have to deal with it on and people won't shut it off because they want the picture on. I just try and ignore it and deal with the sound. At my grandparents house I had to deal with it and I could hear it down the hall and in the living room and no one else could hear it or knew what I was talking about except for my cousin. This was the loudest sound I have ever heard from a muted TV and everyone was talking and I could still hear it.
Ringing in my ears used to bother me but I got used to it. I thought everyone had this in fact. I probably got that from hearing loss.
Sometimes clapping bothers me and sometimes it doesn't. Cheering bothers me if it's loud or dogs barking indoors, kids making these high pitch squealing sounds. Gives me a sensory overload and I want to scream. I used to scream at my dogs to shut up when they start barking or put my hand over their mouths. Sometimes I put them outside. I also hate steam kettles, I hate them. So loud and irritating makes me want to scream and I don't get why my parents act like it's not a problem for them and how can they like the sound? I would just get up and take the kettle off the burner. If they were going to be lazy to get it, I was lazy to turn the darn thing off.
I couldn't stand loud noises in my home my brothers and their friends make. I would end up with meltdowns. One day I decided to just go see Harry Potter to get me out of the house and my parents thought that was smart of me so they gave me money to go see it. Then after a while my brothers started to be quiet and I wouldn't even know they had friends over or having a party. They finally found a solution to our problem, they cans till have their peace while I can still have mine.
Snoring, that drives me up the wall, I cannot get used to it and when I try to ignore it, I get agitated and tense, angry and I want to scream. It keeps me up. Even my ear plugs won't block it all out because sometimes the snoring is so loud. My husband and I don't even sleep in the same room because of this. My ex expected me to because he got used to it and it took him three weeks he says. So he expected it take me that long but it didn't. Maybe I should have told him if there are any sounds out there he is sensitive too, any sounds out there he can't ignore and get used to because they are sooo annoying. If he said yes, then I would have told him "That's what snoring is like for me and you expect me to get used to that? Why don't you get used to that sound?" But then he might have had an excuse like "it's something I don't have to deal with and snoring is something you have to because this is a relationship." He always had reasons like it was okay for him to like kid shows but not okay for me because mine were more childish and his was more for teens or okay for him to be childish but not okay for me because it was more childish and his was more teens. Excuses excuses excuses he had. Why things are okay for him to do but not okay for me.

I do fine with noises I am expecting; it's the startling noises that really get me. I don't like emergency vehicle noises for that reason... particularly fire trucks and ambulances with those awful, awful horns that they blow in between the sirens. I can hear the sirens coming, but the horns... ugh! You never know when they are going to blow them.
Second worst is horrible smooth jazz that they play while on hold on the telephone. I swear they should make that illegal. If I dial into a conference call and the host hasn't arrived yet, I will hang up and dial back in later rather than unnecessarily subject myself to hold music. My co-workers think that's a bit odd, but shrug it off.

First off high pitch sounds. I cannot stand them. Another is in a workshop, like the sander or the bandsaw, in Hard technology the first 2 periods were torture then I asked for some earmuffs and since then its been fine. A few people ask why I wear them and I answer honestly. So yeah earplugs/muffs can be useful. Oh yeah, ticking clocks, they're just so repeditive. If something is louder I'm fine but in my room the clock has to be digital, even if it's a next to silent ticking next to silent isn't good enough. Only one more. Peoples voices when their loud and annoying/arrogant/obnoxious etc. Yeah that's my list of noises and how I cope.
Well had my ears tested for my work, why no idea as I work with computers, anyhow found out I can hear sounds that even Lassie couldn't hear. I can hear transformers or street light giving out high pitched buzzing noises when they malfunction very irritating. Drives me crazy at times..

noise is a huge problem w/ me. in 2nd grade the lady testing hearing kept going with the sounds way longer than the others and i kept hearing it. she told me i hear sounds other don't. i believe it. i keep a couple sound machines going and even that doesn't cover it up. people slurping, crunching, chewing and snapping gum, making any noise eating is real annoying. my siblings use to tie me down and do it to annoy me. they liked hearing me scream. i hate it when people are chewing their food and then start talking. gross. like i want to watch them digest their food. barking dogs! cars without mufflers, diesel trucks, harleys! cars with speakers booming and vibrate are the worst! it's painful, like being punched. car doors slamming are like that too. busy roads, big cities, dripping faucets, snoring, tv's or music blaring, jazz music w/ horns blaring, opera, kids screaming, people talking really loud. i can't understand what they're saying as it's too loud and I want to scream stop. clocks ticking are intolerable. when i stay at peoples homes they wonder why i hide their clocks. real loud banging like metal on metal. earplugs don't work for most annoying sounds plus i don't like how they feel in my ears. will also get obsessive about tracking down sounds to stop them. i do best in a rural area but that's hard since i don't like driving. i start shaking if i have to drive. need to be close to a small town so it's possible to ride bike or walk there. can't handle big cities. sometimes i hear sounds that i can't identify. they're not like the ones you have to track down as you know they're not trackable. they're not really annoying but strange. love some loud sounds, like the ocean. i can't live with anyone as they're all too loud. i tried living in a place that shared a wall with another but had to move. i keep moving to get away from loud sounds, especially barking dogs.
maybe this is a new topic but i can't talk on the phone anymore. started at about age 35. anyone else experience this? can't go to my mailbox or open mail anymore either. and can't fill out forms or deal with any beaurocracy. can't chat. as i get older people are annoying me more and more with their mindless babble. like i want to talk about absolutely nothing. and people with big egos. i avoid them like the plague. i was wondering too if anyone else can't stand taking showers?
