Food allergy and food intolerance it's a grey area, and one that really irritates me! Its confusing. Some doctors completely disagree with nutritional medicine but it has to be said and its obvious what the body ingests WILL have an effect on body and brain. I did a special candida diet years ago and the results:
better skin, great
less bloating
weight loss, yippee
less itching
clearer mind
boredom no hits from sugar snacks, cokes
low mood from the above
dull flat mood no highs or lows
less creativity
less humour and spark.

I gave up wheat, dairy, sugar, fruit, salt and yeast it was too restrictive. Anyway the last few days Ive dropped wheat and reduced sugar and dairy I have more energy, less aspie behaviours and better sleep.
Is this food and diet stuff myth or is it a major contributor to mind wellbeing and reducing the more irritating side of AS? The thing is I'd hate to be "cured" of AS by eating a really dull diet the creativity and focus goes!

I gave up gluten, soy, dairy and reduced my sugar intake and I've had very similar experiences.

I've noticed that I've been more creative and more focused than before. I don't know how much truth there is to the food sensitivities, but I did undergo some tests that indicated what I'm sensitive to. Good luck with the dietary changes. There are some nice websites for ordering gluten free food.

I just dug up the data from the testing. It was done back in 2000 when I was 16. According to the notes jotted over the results (possibly my mom's handwriting) the food sensitivies can effect focus, aggression, concentration, bowel problems and behavior. There can be a withdrawal at first with the change in diet. I found more information with a google search:

Quote:
What are the Pros of GFCF Diets for People with Autism?: If your child responds positively to a GFCF diet, then the pros are significant -- improved digestion, behavior, and focus. Some parents even say they see better language and social skills. Generally, these improvements happen after an initial negative reaction and several months on the diet.

This article is a bit more critical:

I'm also vegan and I've always loved a nice rare steak or burger, but I don't really ever get cravings for that, only for dairy (especially cheese) and gluten-containing foods like breads, beer, seitan etc. It really stinks being unable to eat even the vegan pizzas from the place down the street, but at this time I don't really feel like I have an option.

Well, it's an interesting experience to write about! While NTs talk about their experiences while on heroin or whatever, we sit around trading stories of how our special diets affected us (I've actually never been on a special diet though) and what our antipsychotics do to us and what is the best antidepressant.
