I want to preface this by saying I DO NOT mean this in an eating disorder way, I mean this in a purely sensory way.

My entire life I've hated eating and hated food. Even if there are foods I enjoy there is always a certain threshold that I come to where ingesting anything becomes extremely unpleasant.

I think eating is the most unpleasant sensory experience possible. It's just a process of being assaulted my smells, textures, and tastes, and then forced to shove mush through your orifice. Sometimes I feel really isolated from people because eating is such a social and bonding experience but often times at family dinners there is nothing I can eat, or maybe only one or two things and people comment on how little I am eating.

I want to eat, I'm hungry, and I'm not underweight, I will try any food presented to me as long as I can stomach the smell but the entire thing just feels so awful for me.

I think I've gotten better over the years, I can actually eat food that are touching now and I can tolerate a whole two toppings on my pizza, but there are times where I can't force anything down except a few chips or crackers.

I just want to know if anyone else relates to this, because it makes me feel ridiculous sometimes, and I don't think it's something I can ever truly explain to my family because they will funnel it through their neurotypical perspective and accuse me of having an ED.

No, good food is one of the most enjoyable collection of sensations available.

I wish I liked eating less.

Lol, same.

Now I know the real danger of MSG. It makes everything better.

I'm sure lots of autistic people can relate to this.

I wouldn't say I have problems eating too too much, but there are definitely foods I can't stand purely based on texture rather than taste. Squash doesn't taste too bad, for instance, but I can't stand the texture.

I dont like squash. But I would hard put to say why.

I was picky about some things when I was a child. Not so much now. And it never reduced my food intake. So I kinda do relate, but kinda dont relate. Eating per se was always awesome.

I still dont like tortellinies (despite being addicted to pasta) because they kinda look like dismembered human ears to me. Lol! So I guess that would count as a sensory issue.

Come to think of it maybe I should give them a try again.

I retain my childhood aversion to liver. But even as a child I was fine with liver pate on crackers. I think thats also a visually influenced thing. A liver looks like a beefsteak so my childhood self expected it to taste like maybe a richer version of beef steak...and it doesnt taste like that. Yuck! But as a pasty spread it doesnt look like anything else so you have no expectations for it. So the same thing tastes fine on a cracker.

I was definitely a picky kid. I think I grew out of a lot of it.

My sister, on the other hand, probably had straight-up ARFID. I remember they'd make her sit at the table for hours until she finished her plate and she just refused. Many foods made her gag or even vomit if forced to eat them.

My life with food.
And because of being sick all the time and being held back at the table, I developed emetophobia.
Vomiting is one of the most horrific sensory experience to me and it maintains ARFID behaviors.
It's a vicious circle.

I don't care about it much.
There are few flavours I can even taste because of Interoception issues.
It's bloody expensive and makes a big mess.
I hate the whole social aspect of family meals and restaurant dates.

I could happily do without food.

You know...I wonder if my issues with onions comes from the texture or the taste itself?

I think it's the texture, I don't like the crunchiness of onions

Which is why I only eat them caramelized because it changes the taste & texture!

Gets kinda off,,,when you do not want to eat....can take away from whatever my preserveration is at the moment.
but will eat for nourishment .Rarely does anything get prepared in a way that agrees with my palate .
mostly unless i might have decided to actually cook or bake . Leaning towards Savory instead of sweet foods lately anyhow
