I'm just sort of wondering. Does anybody else here forget that they're holding something and then just drop it. Even if they just picked the thing up a couple seconds earlier? It's kind of annoying.

Also, RIP my poor cup of coffee, at least the mug survived the plunge. I'll probably just move on, but there was a couple seconds where I was devastated.

You...bastard! Juan Valdez, and his burro, slaved for half of his workday to harvest enough beans to make that innocent half pint of coffee that you...murdered!

No.

Dropping things randomly doesn't sound like a good thing from a neurological standpoint.

I’ve never dropped what I was holding because I forgot I was holding it. I have forgotten what I was holding “Where’s my phone? Oh, it’s here in my hand.” I mostly do something like that when I’m really tired.

I was just joking above.

But TBH I dont commonly forget I am holding things. Maybe you were distracted and overwhelmed that moment.

Astronauts returning from the weightlessness of space sometimes do that because they get in the habit of just leaving objects to hang in midair in zero G.

Well my friend terrified himself the other day. He was making a coffee and then just took a tablet without realising. He said it was vitamin D but what if it had been something worse? He has a chronic illness, he thinks that is affecting his brain.

I don't drink coffee and seldom drink anything out of a cup...but I do drink from glasses.

On rare occasions I've gotten distracted and not held the glass level...causing a spill. I don't recall dropping them, however.

I am told that as a child I would do that. Now I typically will put a thing down before I forget about it. (Went back to a store last month to pick up an item I left mid-shelf.) That said, it does seem vaguely familiar that I might have dropped something recently when a very compelling thought came into mind... However, I also live in the moment and can't remember yesterday well ---except data; I remember information. So maybe I have done this recently? Hmm... I recall I broke a favorite mug last month... I think I "missed" the counter: had a thought and hastily put it halfway on the counter. Yesterday I had a thought so ran my toes into the dishwasher (nothing broken but bled). Darn distracting thoughts.

I was curious, clearly it's not normal, I think of it as being kind of an ADHD shiny kind of thing.

I've got the opposite problem, of forgetting I'm holding something. Strolling into the bathroom with my laptop cable in my hand, and in one case absent-mindedly yeeting the grill pan across the kitchen and smashing two plates because I thought I'd put it down already.

It seems like the same basic issue, just the opposite outcome. And I do think absent-minded is a large part of it. I just get that easily distracted.

I have this problem constantly. I threw my phone across the room like this, but luckily it did not get damaged. My doctor says it isn't ADHD...

I totally do stuff like that. I always figured it was part of my ef issues. I blank out a lot of stuff, including things I'm holding in my hands. *shrugs* so it goes sometimes.

I’m a bit curious what your doctor thinks it is then. I don't personally have a strong feeling about it, it just seems like it's ADHD distraction.

Not in my case. That hadn't happened to me.

Because I seem to have this inability to ignore the sensation of 'weight', for the same reason why I couldn't wear jewelry or make up without seemingly forgetting it's there.

Unless I got angry enough that it slips from my hands. But that doesn't count -- I still remember I'm holding something.

Tossing the cup WITH the contents on the other hand... That only happened once.
