...is when someone does or says something perfectly harmless that's even a tiny bit different to what NTs do or say, they laugh hysterically and find it so hilarious. They laugh for days, weeks...saying 'remember that time John said/did XYZ?' and go on and on about it.

When the thing isn't even funny, it's just a thing.

e.g. I saw online an NT had asked their autistic friend to recommend some books they liked and the friend made a list of 30 books with a little summary and a reason they liked each one. The NT wrote about it in the WhatsApp group saying how crazy the person was, how weird, how creepy and everyone joined in making fun and laughing.

Eh?? That's not even funny, it's just someone making a list of books. Big deal.

It's like any tiny deviation from some invisible norm is hilarious, but it's not even a bit funny.

It kinda sounds kinda like XYZ has been hanging out with psychopaths???. Instead of being appreciative of the time it took to make such a list . At the very least it feels unfriendly , And someone who was less intelligent ,felt insecure ? and might have needed a scapegoat ? :| ...imho

The primary NT survival behavior is conformity--they are literally thinking from the "conform or die" mindset. So when they see something that doesn't conform it scares the s**t out of them, and they want to distance themselves as much as they can from it--lest they die. It's stupid, unexamined, insensitive, and, frankly, maladaptive behavior, but it is driven by a basic survival behavior fueled by fear.

On the other hand, sometimes people doing unexpected things is just funny. Lot's of time people have laughed when I've said something I thought was entirely natural and not unusual, and usually I'm okay that I did something unexpected and made them laugh, even if it wasn't my intention. It's all about the expectations of who you are with and how you violate or don't violate those expectations--not necessarily about one person being weird and the other normal.

But I'm going to conclude that we all need friends who can create thorough recommended-reading bibliographies!

Seems plain to a Autist....but ? apparently the insightfulness of the above post seems to escape average NTs. very possibly .?

Do you mean the autist who made a list of books?

Yes I think they sound like a really awful group of people with no manners, to say the least. If I didn't like the list, I'd just say 'thank you' politely.

People just seem to react with rudeness these days.

It is pretty weird of them to think conformity equals survival isn't it. The whole journey of the human race from the year dot has been 'what if we did it THIS way instead?' and invent something to make their lives easier. Nonconformists have made us evolve from the stone age to now.

Oh yes I'm always getting laughed at for saying something unexpected, but not in such a cruel way where people poke fun and go on about it for weeks. That's just cruel. Calling the book list person 'weird' 'creepy' etc. That's like bullying.

Yes I'd love a list of book recommendations. Maybe the person who asked for the list just couldn't read very well and they were intimidated. :?

here is the other side..of a NTs coin , :( very possibly . In early days of herds and hunter gatherers .
The animal often sought protection in the herd , concept ? And occassionally if a animal fell ill or fell behind.
the herd , might gather around as a group for some type of protection , for the individual ? ( think this is true for elephants ) but if that animal was in disfavour with the herd maybe ? It gets left behind ? But its always the one that thinks outside the box that creates the growth of better concepts for the whole group ,sometimes .?

Just playing the Devils advocate :nerdy:

I think most NT's are closeted sociopaths. I had an accident in the second grade because the stupid teacher would not let me use the restroom and I didn't think to just get up and go anyway. I stayed in public school until the 5th grade but this ONE boy who was in my second grade class with me was laughing at me having an accident in 2nd grade all the way to when I left the public school in 5th grade. At my school if you had an accident. You went to the nurse's office and borrowed a pair of navy blue sweatpants. It was like putting on a giant target. All the other kids and teachers knew who was a pants wetter. Even if you wore your own navy blue sweat pants from home, you were accused of having an accident. Navy blue sweatpants were social suicide at my school. Why couldn't the school have different colors? Like red or orange or black (Cincinnati Bengals country and everyone wore those colors all the time).

That was SO funny to him and he couldn't let it go. He's probably still laughing about it to this day. I read somewhere about a kid who's family had immigrated from Serbia or Albania who had an accident in first grade. Another boy who saw it harassed him until they graduated high school and had all gone to different colleges. What is it that's so funny about a child having an accident when young that is so funny to other kids? What is it with teachers denying the right to use the restroom too?

A lot of NT's act as though they are still in high school, even as adults. Cliques, backroom sniggering, scapegoating and making pariah's out of ND folk. A lot of them are downright oppressive people.

I think you're right. Being part of the herd/tribe was the most important way of surviving back then. Oddballs could easily have been excluded.

However, in the past, autistic people would probably have been the ones quietly inventing a new weapon or tool

I think a lot of them are, yes. Predators. That laughing for all those years about someone having an accident is just crazy. Move on, dude! Find other things to laugh about!

It suggests he is very immature, his brain has stopped growing at a young age level and he has a very empty life and not much in it to enjoy. I think you win that round, Magic Meerkat, because you moved on.

It's like my sister in law. She is 60, my husband is 52. She is STILL going on about how he used to scoot round in his potty as a baby. Move on, sister in law. Find other things to laugh at.

You are correct.

After I had a baby and took her to mummy and baby groups, I was bullied by the 'popular girl clique'. They commented about how behind she was, how she wasn't good enough etc. etc. Which is horrible. Who criticises a baby FFS?

When I used to go to take her to and from school, the playground full of mums was like a pool of piranhas. Little cliques everywhere, it was easy to say the wrong thing and someone would start a lifelong feud against me. I remember one particular time I was sitting with some other mums waiting for an event, they had held some kind of grudge against me for months, and they were sitting looking at me, whispering about me behind their hands and giggling. It was so pathetic. I was actually laughing to myself at their pathetic behaviour as I read the school newsletter. They were in their 40s FFS! Acting like teenagers.

GROW UP, PEOPLE! You're making idiots of yourselves.

Right? It's really sad when people don't act their age in a negative way.

I couldn't believe the pettiness of groups of mothers. They are supposed to set good examples to their children but it was all a competition: whose child was 'best'. Whatever 'best' means. Everyone is different. And all the bullying and whispering behind hands. OMFG.

Small people seem to only concieve things in a small way..and this is how they get raised ..this is ideal for Gov , institutions . Also means people running things badly ..will not normally get held to account for not making upgrades to the educational system. but this is only my opinion / thoughts on the topic.

you're right, it is ideal. Exactly what the government wants.
