Hey guys :) I'm new here, so I thought I might try a question or two.

My teeth aren't exactly horribly bad, but they're not straight either, so I probably need to get them fixed up sooner or later. The major problem I have with it is having something cemented in my mouth, essentially permanently, for a couple months - I am just major uncomfortable with this idea.

Plus add on I'm highly sensitive and get sensory overload a lot. I don't even wear a watch because of that. I can imagine that I would be in the office a week after getting them on, having them cut off.

I'm thinking about getting those clear plastic ones, since you can take them off. Plus no one can see them, which is a bonus since I'm basically a senior in college, but I don't really mind that. The problem is finding someone to do that - the orthos I've talked to will only do braces plus the clear together.

Any suggestions/personal experiences/comments? I would really appreciate it - it certainly is a kind of unusual question :) Thanks.

I had braces on for about 16 months to straighten my teeth. Initially I wasn't keen on the idea of having a load of metal stuck in my mouth but to be honest I didn't notice it after the first couple of days. I think if you want your teeth straightened, it's certainly worth it.

I had braces for a year when I was at school. The main reason I got them was because I had a tooth poking way out, which made me very self conscious and I rarely smiled. They were a pain for the time I had them, but worth it in the end. I felt much more confident not having to think about the way my mouth looked all the time.

Bu then again some people look very attractive with a tooth out of place. Like Craig Nicholls. ;)

I had braces for nine months when I was fourteen. Yes they're annoying at first and they hurt really badly when you get them tightened, but overall you don't really notice them. It's sort of like having your ears pierced. Sort of.

Well I have a pretty blatent overbite on top, but otherwise everything out of whack is on the bottom, so it's not really visible too much. I never had braces when I was a teenager.

Something that bugs me is that the orthos seem to want to make it "perfect" and I'd just like it to be healthy and good enough cosmetically. I guess it makes sense they don't want to sign on to only doing a job halfway, but I'm still mega-uncomfortable with anyone who wouldn't listen to what I want. Oh well.

I'm a guy and I don't have my ears pierced (and probably never will) :) I think I would find that similarly uncomfortable.

Thanks for the help! :)

I have braces and have had them for just over three years. For the first three days or so they were a little irritating to get used to, and your mouth may feel bigger until you get used to them, which the time can vary in each individual.

They are not that bad, and the outcome in the end is worth it. The only thing that is bad about them is the price. They are SOOO expensive.

I need braces don't know if I'll ever will. My teeth are very crowded and I guess I have a small jaw atleast according to to dentists. I don't know how I would take it though, I don't like the thought of having metal in my mouth.

Braces are not so bad as they seem. I've had them when I was 13 or so. Initially I found them annoying to say the least, especially because I was supposed to wear them all day long, and also while eating, which was difficult at first. But I soon got used to them and after a few weeks I hardly even noticed them anymore. Bottom line: in my opinion, they're perfectly bearable once you get used to them.

Except for the first week or so, I've never had any problems with my braces. I would recommend them; my teeth used to be really crooked , but now they are straight. It's your choice whether or not you want braces.

Try invisible braces...
http://www.invisalign.com/generalapp/us/en/index.jsp

I only know about them because of an ad in the dentists...

It also seems that they will not damage surface enamel the way metal ones can.

I had them for 4 years-- from the end of grade 7 thru the end of grade 11. They worked... then I had to wear a retainer for a while which worked... my teeth still aren't perfect but they look more normal; a piece of one tooth is chipped off tho and some of the spacing is uneven. So it looks like I never really got dental treatment at all.

I wonder if there's a correlation between AS and crooked teeth. Or maybe it's just that a lot of kids need them.

Yeah - I'm even eligible for the clear invisalign ones, it's not too much more expensive than metal, and I think it would work great...

The problem is that they want to do plastic most of the way, then finish up with metal for another couple of months because it's "easier to get precise results that way." I just don't get why they won't give me the plastic the whole way...
