Why do some ads have shouting in them?

I just don't get it... do you reckon anyone in the world goes "oh, I must listen more to those shouts!"

It's, like, the worst ads for me (sports, some drama), personally, but how in the world could they ever attract anyone?

Like this?

Well, considering how memorable those ads were, they're probably hoping to match them.

The purpose of a lot of marketing is to stand out and make your product memorable.

That old line, "Bad publicity is better than no publicity" has been proven wrong in many cases, and in my house, we often make a deliberate choice to avoid companies, products, and businesses that engage in annoying practices like shouting, bad or ear-worm music, weird presentations, door-to-door pamphlet handers, and stuff that just raises red flags. (Creepy smile on that woman in the car commercial...do you think she's getting even thinner and paler? A light spray tan and more natural colors for the hair and makeup could, yuh know, bring her back from BarbieLand. Why is a voiceless stranger trying to sell me on a "cure' one minute but admitting the next that it might leave me in anaphylactic shock, or at least a nice Epi-Pen bruise on my thigh. Or maybe it'll just kill me. Money, money. money. And machismo. Rambo with a chain saw, right?

I don't like it either, but with all the frenetic, loud sounds and weird visuals, I'm guessing we're not part of the intended target audience. Fine by me!!

They turn the volume up on TV spots so you will...hear the message as you walk out of the living room and into the kitchen to get a snack.

And studies show that annoying ads sell.

But my guess is that the race isnt ALWAYS to the most annoying.

There was a TV spot that ran in the 80s that was so creepy that I would stare it like you stare at the head of snake. Decades later I still remember it.

An attractive hot couple...young. Just under 30. Cute girl. A breezy looking yuppie guy in a suede jacket. Sitting down together at a restaurant. You assume that they are a romantic couple...but then in their dialogue it becomes apparent that they are brother and sister. She has moved to New York to become an artist and he is visiting her. Fine. But then ...from their dialogue you start to get that he has a creepy obsession with her. And they act sorta like a couple.

Yuck!

I still remember seeing it several times in the 80s.

BUT...I dont remember what the ad was FOR.

Dont remember the brand. Dont remember the product. Dont even remember what kind of product it was. Coffee? A financial planning company? No clue as to what part of the universe the product was from. Cant remember. So in that case one of the most annoying (world class annoying) ads I ever saw ...failed to sell.

I was actually thinking more of audio ads, but at least those have interesting visual content, funeralxempire; the kind that I hate most, sports ads, seem to think that just because those who stay for the entire game liked the end's furore that somehow those who didn't, or are not interested in sports at all, are interested in just shouting... I just can't believe how many times I'm ending up sending complaints to the bbc who clearly couldn't give an iota of sh!t about anyone who might be sound sensitive. Often they don't even announce it! Just immediate, ENDLESS SHOUTING! They wouldn't just display images on tv that would make epileptics fit, so why the f**k does no one care about sound-sensitive people on the spectrum who might end up with no hearing because of absolutely boring sh!t! Goddamn I hate this world and humans...

BBC don't and have never had commercial ads, in fact that's one of the main things they are known for. The only advertising is for their own content (other shows)

I suspect your referring to the other channels? which may explain why your being ignored, a bit like complaining to Microsoft about Apple products.

How do you know that Sodepressed lives in the UK?

Sodepressed might live here in the States where the BBC doesnt exist (except in bits and pieces on some cable channels).

For what it's worth, being especially sensitive to sound doesn't mean your ears are inherently more delicate.

It's a matter of processing, not a physical difference. You won't end up with damaged hearing, just enraged from over-stimulation.

I think there is a psychological aspect towards hearing shouting that the ads are trying to use. Ill have to research again, but I know something is there.

Off-topic, but I'm curious: is "fit" a common term for "seizure" in some places (England, Australia, Canada, NZ)?

Yes.
"Going into fits" is a common expression. Both for literal medical seizures as in epilepsy, and even more commonly now its used in hyperbole to mean "a big emotional response" like how folks say "going crazy".

"My parents would have FITS if they found out that I introduced may baby brother to smoking crack". Like that.

I dont know if, or how, its related to the word "fit" to mean "parts that are able to be joined together" (like jigsaw puzzle pieces or car parts).

Just now noticed that. That there are too kinds of "fit" in the English language. Never thought about it before. :)

I always mute the ads. All ads, as soon as the ads come on. This works for TV, or internet that is viewed on the TV (which is how I nearly always watch streaming programs). Not sure if it would work for other devices.

Because they're stupid. And also being loud is a part of American culture.

Because they don't want me to buy their product

While that is true to an extent, the sound difference still means that the volume is suddenly much higher, so I'm assuming it does do some damage (it's not like I can have it at a lower volume for the rest in case they begin shouting, or I wouldn't be able to hear the rest, then... it's why it's so annoying, as I can only deal with it when it begins...)

I just wish they realized how much nuisance they're causing, at the very least... wouldn't be surprised if some people don't even bother listening due to it, I'm on the verge of giving up for that and some other reasons... could asd rights organizations possibly help?
