Someone told me that it harder to control Aspergers the older you get. Why is it harder?

What is control? Overcome your fear to communicate with people?

I don't know. My social shortcomings are getting easier with age, cuz I'm learning more.

When I was younger I had more energy - both physically and mentally. I could do a lot of masking and could afford to engage in activities that consumed a lot of energy and still have energy left. For me, what has made it harder in my 50's is that I don't have that energy anymore.

control? I wonder what they meant by that. The more we learn about our own autistic struggles, the better we can get a figuring out how to make every day life better. Most of us are not like we were as children, we have learned ways to cope and adjust. Autism in general does not get worse as we age. (studies over the past 5 years have shown that, although a few reports, usually done with very small number of people studied differ). What does that person mean by "control autism"?????????

How old does a person with autism have to get before they are completely uncontrollable???
( ;) that is making fun of that person's statement)

I don't think that it is, at least until you're really old. I think it's probably more a matter of having competing things on your mind that can and the tendency for folks to have fewer supports, just people in general, as we age.

Once you're talking about somebody that's in cognitive decline, then all bets are off.

It may be, in the sense that old people tend to have more physical ailments and incapacities to deal with, so if you've got ASD as well, you can get overwhelmed with too much crap to fix and not so many physical abilities to fix it with. OTOH, when you're old, you're not forced to work for an employer any more, and the world of work is a big source of trouble for a lot of Aspies, because the employer controls so much of your life, so if they don't give you the accommodations you need, your life can get pretty miserable.

All in all, I don't think my ASD is more of a problem to me than it's ever been, at least so far.

New here. Just recently (2 years ago) been diagnosed with Asperger's. Its a late diagnosis at the age of 38.
I have felt like life has been getting increasingly hard over the years and my theory is the amount of energy that you have.
My biggest issue has always been social masking and the resulting burnout. I think the older you get you lose "tolerance" and energy and the burnout costs more for you.
Its like enduring an exercise when your young vs when you are older.
Just my theory from personal experience.
