Saturday I made a ten buck purchase at a grocery store

Today is Tuesday and the transaction is still not posted in my account statement

I tried to look up reasons why and couldn't find anything

What would have happened if I unintentionally pushed "debit" and it was a credit card

I have a nervous disposition and constantly fear and feel and think that some drastic bad thing is going to happen to me because I unintentionally did something wrong

Constantly stressed out

Something like that

Need advice, answers and solutions

Probably ok. Sometimes some stores take their time before they do their books and upload details to the bank system.

Is like writing cheques where one may be cashed straight away and another may be cashed a month later, though credit cards are processed quicker than cneques.

No good worrying for things that have not happened. Just wait and see how things pan out. Most of the time all will sort itself out and be ok.

Because you did it on...saturday.

Prolly wont go through till the first banking day of Monday.
I wouldnt worry.

You could call the credit card customer service number on the card...they might have it as a "pending transaction that hasnt gone through yet".

If you pushed "debit" instead of "credit" ....and its a credit card ...then the transaction wouldnt have even gone through in the first place. The salesclerk would have told you...or the self service register would have refused it.

Let me take a wild guess about something.

Maybe some banks collaborate with Visa and issue newfangled type cards that can go either way credit or debit amd maybe you have one of those . In which case if you hit "debit" the sale would be charged to your bank account and not to your charge card account. Either way they got your money.

Natural plastic and mountain goat

Thank you very much for your answers

As usual I was wrong in that I completely overreacted

A couple of hours later the transaction was posted to my account

Nothing drastic or disastrous , happened thus far

Maybe tomorrow

I know that if I use Paywave instead of inserting my card into the card reader that it sometimes takes up to a week to appear on my bank statement. That's frustrating so I only use Paywave if it's a small amount of money or I'm in a rush.

If your card was issued be a credit union or another smaller entity it often takes longer to process, especially on weekends. A couple days is not unusual though.

Glad it showed up in the end. Even if it had never shown, I can't see how anything bad would come of it. You'd just have been 10 dollars better off.

This is a source of annoyance at times. Different credit cards have different policies in terms of at what point they show the charge, but at least with credit cards as long as it's authorized and you've got the money, it's not an issue. Many debit cards won't show stuff that's pending and it can lead to overdrafts if you're not careful.

As far as the purchase goes, if there's a receipt, there probably isn't an issue. The whole point of a receipt is so that you know what you paid for and how much. If the machine is spitting out receipts without payment, that's a massive problem for them.

I wound up with a free item one time because the company was transitioning to a new system and my transaction got lost in the shuffle. I did try to pay them anyways, but when it got to the point of me having to call them with the information to pay, I just gave up. At some point the cost of paying is just not worth it for anybody involved. Had it been the result of me screwing up my payment information, I probably would have called anyways and got it figured out.
