Before they labeled us as "Aspergers", throughout history we were of a caste called "Geniuses."

What do you think?

Thing is, AS does not require a high IQ, just a normal one.

I think idiot-savant is more truely descriptive. genius is a 'glamour' term. I'm smart and stupid at the same time.

An idiot savant is someone that only has a couple splinter talents at the expense of a lot of intelligence elsewhere.

GRANTED, AS people can seem stupid, etc... OK, I admit it, I have ALSO seemed stupid from time to time! But the disparity that would make one an idiot savant is excluded from people with AS. I have been called a genius far more often than stupid, and nobody ever called me ret*d. Of course, ret*d is a common slight, so I am not saying that means anything, or that an AS person can't be called ret*d by some jerk.

BTW Genius is very over used. I would never call it a glamour term. It is like guru. It is overused SO much that you can't trust it as a legitimate assessment. I guess that is one reason I hate it even when people use it to describe me.

"Eccentric geniuses" sounds more accurate.

hmmm... in the past I was called HFA, if I go back after not being evaluated in 16 years, thatll change to aspie of course, as I have a normal to above average IQ (im assuming this cause I always did good in school and learned to blend in so well, actually had a phycologist tell me she thought i may have a better then average IQ, but without the actual test, that means nothing)

DX'ed with HFA as a child. However this was in 1987 and I am certain had I been DX'ed a few years later I would have been DX'ed with AS instead.

School performance and IQ don't always have a great correlation. Some DUMB people do GREAT at school, and some smart people may not do well.
As for me? I'm smart. People that know me never doubt it, and IQ tests show it. I DID start out in school doing VERY well, even with no effort. I actually passed the first few grades because of my tests. I never did any homework, so they had to think about it! Towards the end though, I did worse. I was bored and just lacked any real desire. Still, my job is based on one of my main interests, and everyone is astounded how well I do. They sell me as THE BEST, and nobody is dissapointed.

Still, IQ isn't supposed to be the sole determinant for AS. Some have a HIGH IQ and are considered HFA, and some have a far lower IQ and are considered AS.

Yes. They also considered some of us to be paranoid, or so set in our ways that we could not see reason.

How are we to know if all the geniuses had AS or not? Just because they were eccentric didn't mean they had disorders, it might have been personality for all you know :0
