Whenever I want to use an emoticon I have to hold the mouse on it to see what each one means so I know what one to use.

It's the same when people use them in their posts, I have to hold the mouse on it to see what it means because the writing shows up and says things like "very happy" "sad" "confused" etc.
I feel very stupid that I have to do this.

Am I the only one who does this, or are there more that do it too?

A lot of the time I cant find one that matches the emotion I want to show so I just choose the closest one.

The "laughing out laud" emoticon kind of annoys me. For a while I couldn't figure out that it was supposed to be laughing. I don't move my upper lip up and down like a chipmonk when I laugh.

WTF

The first time I saw the "laughing out loud" emoticon was on this forum. I had no idea what it was either. It does look a little bit like a chipmonk mouth movement doesn't it...hahaha

I really wish there was the option of a closed-mouthed smile. :skull:

WHAT? YOU smile like that also? I NEVER show my teeth.

BTW I have SOME trouble with some of this too. But this kind of problem IS a symptom of AS, listed in a lot of places.

Yeah, me too - not because my teeth are bad but because smiles showing all of a person's teeth look fake and manic to me. I think there should also be a skull emoticon for when you feel nothing at all.

I don't show my teeth while smiling too. My teeth are not very pretty (what doesn't mean they are horrible) and generally my face doesn't look well when I'm smiling.

I think I can't control the muscles of my face too much - I sometimes smile in the most inapropriate times or when I feel there's a moment I am expected to smile, my smile is fake - there were several situations when somebody wanted to take a photo and told me to smile and in spite of the fact I tried to form a smile, later having seen said photos I found out I had a wry face on them.

A bit like in this scene  ---> http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=1ANUP5-aW4E Well, maybe it isn't that bad but smile on my face rarely looks naturally, only when I'm really happy.

I don't find emoticons confusing, I just find some emoticons used on certain boards to be freaking fugly.

Oh and that ad for emoticons that yells 'hellllooooooo' when you run your mouse over it and the other 'oh my god, no way' one are beyond irritating

I also have to do a lookup to see what an emoticon is trying to say. I really only use them to clarify when I am being sarcastic or saying something that might sound really serious, but I am trying to be a bit humorous.
The confused one looks like me with a smirk or an annoyed face. I got a slight upturn on one side of my mouth from an injury so it is easy for me to do the half frown, half smile.

They're confusing to me too and I'm NT. I guess I can understand the "happy, very happy, sad, shocked" but that's about it. And if I think about it, the "embarrassed" one too and the "rolling eyes". But the difference between this: :( and this:  ?? No idea. Or between this: :x and this:  and this:  ?? Still no idea. And the laughing one is creepy.

What really gets me is when people use those new style ones that are horizontal like this: ^_^ What the heck is that supposed to be?
