I dunno, I see it all over the forums, and somehow I guess I might be the only one who likes going out to public places. Well, probably not the only one but it seems to be discouraged a lot here.

So this is the thing...

The Mall- seldom because of practicality. There's not mall for miles since I live out in wilderness, but when I go there it seems there's so many things to look at and places to walk to, sometimes they have a pet store too in it and I love to see the pets D:>

Walmart- we have one of these, I go shopping about once a week for groceries. It's fun, I get to pick some foods I want, and I feel responsible because in a sense I grew up with Mom and Dad doing it so it feels like one of those grownup things to do. Also I get to walk around a bit and stretch my legs. Clothes shopping is usually once a year for school, and I get to add to my horde of big pants and cute things to wear. That's something else I enjoy~ Not to mention I like getting some more pencils for drawing, chocolate as comfort food, and when I've saved up an occasional video game or so.

I've done online shopping before but I don't trust Ebay now with games since I had defective games sent to me or none coming through at all or the wrong game. I would rather go out and get these things myself than to wait for it to come to me. Ah well... x:

So what are your thoughts?

The Upside of Shopping 8)

  • Wandering around a shopping centre with hordes of strangers can, paradoxically, feel less taxing than being somewhere with a small number of known people. You can remain anonymous, the encounters are transient and therefore lower-stakes, and money transactions tend to have a stereotyped form & content and less variability than other kinds of interactions.
  • The fact that you are shopping in the first place implies that you have money to spend, which in turn implies power and pleasure. Then you get home with your glittering new purchases and add them to your treasure trove. In Australia there is a kind of native bird called a satin bowerbird, the male of which is driven by instinct to collect shiny and/or blue objects to line his nest, thus making himself more attractive to the female. I believe that most of us have a touch of bowerbird in us.
The Downside of Shopping :x
  • If there are too many other people out shopping at the same time, if you've had to circle endlessly around the rooftop to find parking, if you've had to bring other people with you, if you have a lot of stuff to get and not much time to do it in, that's a problem. No sooner do you arrive than all you want to do is scream your lungs out and flee for the nearest exit. Christmas-shopping season is the perfect example of this.
  • Unless you are very disciplined in your spending (i.e. you are "good"), or you throw out, give away, donate to charity, etc. (more wasteful), sooner or later you come up against the limitations of physics. You can only cram so many goods into your living quarters before you have a storage crisis, or an available-space crisis.
  • You must then learn to use, clean & maintain, take out insurance on, and generally live in service to an ever-growing pile of possessions. And if you have more DVDs than you'll ever watch, more clothes than you'll ever wear, more appliances than you'll ever use, and so on, you may have helped the economy but you won't have done yourself any favours.
  • In the developed world there is a constant tension between the desire to obtain value for money, and the knowledge that the factory worker who made our shoes probably only got paid $2 a day for it.
  • If you keep going to the same shops often enough, people start recognising you. This is not always a good thing.
I don't think anyone on WP would try to actively discourage anyone else from shopping, though.

I hate shopping. I end up spending all my money and coming home with completely useless crap!

I don't really like shopping in person or going to malls either. Usually everything I need is available online for the same price or only a little more (i.e., shipping)

The only times I go into an actual store is if I need something urgent, or something fresh that would spoil, or if I'm with friends and we're checking out something or browsing.

I hate shopping (and I am very much NT), it's not the shopping experience itself, it's just that I can never find what I am looking for and clothes shopping is worse! Nothing fits right or doesn't come in my size or the colors are wrong. It is always very frustrating to me!

I hate shopping, i go out of nessessity. I hate crowds. the only place I enjoy going to is lows, i have a few home improvement projects and enjoy the smell of the place, plus their is not a ton of ppl their when I go.

I go shopping for groceries 1 time every 2 weeks, as soon as the place opens, im quick, have all my money lined up in denomiation order, im in and out. I go to walmart after grocery store. Again, same thing, tho i buy different items. the crowd here is always to me unbarible, ill buy 1 or 2 things and book! sometimes tho ill check the camping goods section, then its to express checkout, everyone looks at me weird cause i only buy 2 items or so. At least i feel weird everyone who goes to walfart gets a shoppingcart full of stuff, not me. im the quickest, most efficent shopper around, even can give exact change in a few seconds, as b4 i get to the register i even have my coins in my hand lined up according to denomination.

I enjoy getting out of the house and watching people from time to time. If I go to the mall, I'll buy a couple of discounted shirts or pants, and sit in the food court to nurse a coffee and brownie. It's something to do.

If there's something I don't like about shopping, it's having a lot of stuff in my house. I try to keep my place as spare and empty as possible, so I carefully weigh the merits of each purchase versus the burden of having one more thing to clean, organize, and pack the next time I move.

It seems by the sound of it a few of you guys are pack rats. Fortunately, I don't have that problem since most of the time I buy clothes and food(both of which I enjoy a lot c: ) Or a game. Most of my possessions that I got over my lifetime had burned in a house fire though, that may explain it.

Also when I found out that I had a horde of plushies I would go and donate some off to charity c: That made me feel good~

I enjoy going out, generally not to the mall, but to stores that have products that interest me. Crowds don't bother me particularly, although if I want to be able to talk to my wife then that's hard with a lot of background noise. We'll often go to Barnes & Noble for cheesecake, then I'll look at CDs and DVDs while she looks at books.
I seem to be atypical in general, though, because I do like to socialise. I'm just not very good at it. :(

I hate shopping in stores, malls, etc. I love shopping online. When I go to the store, I end up walking about 3X as much as I'd need to becuase I avoid isles with other people in them and circle back to get wht I need, waiting for the isle to be vacant. I will not go shopping on Sturdays unless I bsolutely have to. I try to shop evenings and late Sunday afternoons when the store seem to be less crowded.

I like socializing too, but I can't deny that it takes practice. I was told that my people skills are getting better though.

AS=Anti Shopping! :D

Nah, not exactly. During my childhood and adolescence I never cared for shopping for clothes unless I saw something I really loved, which was rare. Mind you, during my adolescence I collected costume jewelry-- I had bins full of bracelets, boxes of rings, and 8 fishing tackle-style boxes all full of just earrings. I gave away most of my rings and bracelets, though. I like stuff that draws attention up to my head, like earrings do.

But now, I go on shopping sprees for clothes! I posted how I have so many wardrobes, with different themes! I can't wait to get this other job I think I found and my Social Services check so that I can buy more stuff I really want!
