I must say I do not have a big problem with fluorescent lights once they are on. But the strong flashing as you switch them on often triggers very loud vocal tourettes tics and I have to turn my back and close my eyes until they are on.
The worst ones are those at hospital used to display x-ray and ct-scan plates etc. Even on TV medical shows I still get tics because they happen so unexpectedly. Sometimes I feel as though I am about to have a fit as they are being switched on.

I love fluorescent lights... they make me feel alive when I'm in my shrink's office and desperately depressed. He hates fluorescent lights but insisited on turning them on for me because he knew I was so depressed and understimulated that I needed light or sound or something to save my soul!

They really don't bother me unless they are old and flickering, or the ballast is going bad and giving off a 60Hz hum.

We have Mercury Vapor lights in the warehouse that I work in, and they can be really obnoxious when they're turned on as well.

I actually kind of like fluorescent lights. The flickering when they start up can be bothersome, and when they start flickering or make those humming noises it becomes a problem. But I actually like their light better than an incandescent bulb's. Though neither is quite as good as sunlight.

I have trouble with flickering and old/cheap bulbs that are not quite flickering, but close, and it seems to bother me a lot more than most people.

One time while sitting in a class one of the fluorescent lights started flickering and I couldn't stand to look at it, so I just covered up my eyes and tried to just listen. In retrospect I should have just left.

But otherwise I'm around lots of fluorescents all day long and I almost never have a problem...

I don't mind them at work, but at home they are bad. Don't give me the warm cozy feeling that I like. They bug me when I'm reading. I always detect some flicker.

I'm ok with them as long as they work properly. I have one at home that's flickering and it drives me nuts--- but I keep forgetting to buy a new long bulb when i go to the store. Then I get home and see the flickering light and I go "DAMN!". I'm going to write a reminder note and post it on my steering wheel in my car so i don't forget......

We have flourescent lights at shfl and at my other job..Co-workers are always turning them on, and I am always turning them off. I can handle them when I have to, but not for prolonged periods of time, and never volluntarily.
When i was in school, they were a contributing factor to my having a very bad time.

I don't have issues with them. In fact I love them.

With fluorescent lighting in public toilets, it's not a big problem but they do make me sickish. Everything seems to be different under that blue or turquoise light, in a nasty, unnatural way; it gives me that sense of unreality which one normally gets when one has a high fever or is on psychedelics (or severely manic/depressed).

I've never seen a flickering fluorescent light, so I don't know how I'd react to it, but my guess is that it could make me quite unwell. Large blinking lights tend to make me dizzy and disoriented - the more so the larger the light, and the faster the blinking - and I suppose if it were a fluorescent light, this would be amplified a few times.

I don't have a problem with fluorescent lights in general. They're bright, efficient, and they get the job done. Unless it's one of those old, worn-out lights that buzz and flicker; those give me headaches. What I absolutely hate are those compact fluorescent light bulbs. They look ugly, they're dim when you first turn them on (reaching full brightness takes time), and they give a harsh white glow that makes you feel like you're in a hospital. I like the regular incandescent lights. Sure, they waste some energy, and they get hot, but they worked ever since they were invented. Why fix what ain't broke?

Most fluorescent lights are either not installed properly or maintained. They usually give me
a headache if they flicker. I have compact fluorescent bulbs in my apartment, but someday
I'll get the LED lights when they become available.

I have epilepsy and they make me have small seizures called auras or simple partial seizures. I hate them.

A kid at my school had a problem with flickering fluorescent lights. They were really old from the late 60s or early 70s and sometimes buzzed. The school called in a professional electrician who said there was nothing wrong with them. The kid claimed that blue tinted sunglasses reduced the flickering effect but the science teacher wouldn't take him seriously.

I don't like the blue-green mercury street lights. They no longer exist in the UK but are very common in the US. I can remember visiting somewhere in Surrey (Redhill?) that had them around 1980 and the light really hurt my eyes.
