As we get older and wiser, and become ever more mindful, how common is overcompensating for shortcomings?

An electro-mechanical analogy would be a servo system. The identification of a need for change can result in an overshoot. With human systems, experience generally reduces overreactions.

With regards to social behavior, perhaps more common than it is in the general population since behaving in ways that do not at all come naturally is difficult to accurately gauge and fine-tune.

I think it's not about how common it is and more about a person's self-awareness. Self-awareness often comes with time and experience though, so I guess it could, but self-awareness isn't guaranteed either it's something you actually have to try to get.
