Anyone else mumbles or talks too low?

Recently working as a Cashier, It brought up my issues with mumbling or speaking too low in a big way. Anyone else can relate?

When I'm feeling shy.

When I am unsure what to say.

When I cannot know how loud I talk.

When I'm too angry and it kept spilling out.

When I ended up saying something I had in mind.


Otherwise, while it just happens to me, it's not really a constant habit of mine.

I am sure that is an issue I could have, but I have yet to get a job where I talk to very many customers so it has not come up yet.

I have the same issue. Everyone I know says that I talk too quietly. People are always telling me to speak up because they can't understand or hear what I'm saying. It can be quite frustrating when I can't get my point across without having to repeat myself. I've also worked as a cashier and I don't think I have ever went a day without a customer saying "what?" or "can you repeat that please".

Yes, I have always had that problem. I mostly didn't work with the public however.

One of my sons does that. We all hold our breaths when he speaks in order to listen better, but usually we still need him to repeat. I think it's the combination of introversion, lack of practice and low confidence. When we ask him to read a story or letter, his voice is normal volumed and not slow at all.

Opposite problem. Volume control is often an issue. It may sometimes come about as a result of frustration that I feel nobody is listening to me.

having a softer basso voice i often have to raise it to be heard.

Plenty of annoying lil dipshits often have the nerve to grunt "huh" and "what" instead of "excuse me ", especially at work. They do that so frequently, a long time ago, I pretty much gave up on talking, except a couple exceptions. (Cost benefit analysis)

Almost all the time, ass holes either don't hear, understand, care, believe or remember, what I tried to say. Meanwhile, those idiots flap their traps like every thought and emotion that goes through their heads, is the latest greatest scientific invention. f**k my ghetto ass coworkers. They are "paucity of content"

Home Depot, where I currently work, is often loud

Then last week, human resources had the nerve to tell me that the doctor note that said that I was not allowed to lift over fifty pounds, was too old (3 years ago), and I have to get a doctor to fill out another form. Human resources said that if the doctor says that my back pain is getting better, I don't need lifting assistance. Human resources said that if my back pain is getting worse, they will see if they can put me in a job without heavy lifting, but they said that cashier is the only job without heavy lifting.

I am really afraid of being forced against my will to be Cashier. Some customers have had the nerve to bark at me, touch me, call me "Chino", and tattle on me and laugh at me.

But that's kind of beside the point

The other thing is that I usually find that almost everyone talks way too loudly. I can hear them from way too far away. Sometimes they give me headaches.

Mmhm. It’s not really intentional, just sort of a learned habit from not being talkative (in real life, I ramble online). It can be hard to speak up because a normal volume for my voice feels like I’m yelling to me. So I don’t really have an ear for how I should be talking, I guess.

It seems like I sometimes talk normally though when I’m not “paying attention” to it? Like if I get invested in a conversation with close friends they might comment on me talking differently. Which obviously makes me talk quieter again, but I’m not blaming them.

I don’t think there’s much you can do beyond make a concentrated effort to practice being louder.

When people complain about my mumbling I start doing a bad david lynch impression. I by default have kind of a deep quiet voice but speaking in a higher register like lynch cuts through any ambient sound so everyone can hear me fine without having to yell and strain my voice.

I used to both mumble and speak softly.

Unfortunately for everyone else I no longer struggle with those issues.
