or at least don't mind living in small towns? how do you like living in a small town? i know i live in a small town because the cost of living is cheaper and it is harder to get lost in. life is a lot less complicated in my small town. sure, there isn't much to do or see but i generally hermit myself away at home away from people anyhow because it is more peaceful that way. how many other WPers here are similar? i want to know your thoughts on this.

I'm so reclusive it doesn't matter where I am. I'll be indoors most of the time, and people will gossip about the weird lady with cats in her window who only goes out in the dark.

I love small towns to be honest. They're my first pick especially if they're in the lake district or offer outdoor sports like boating and fishing. I actually co-own a house in a blinkie town (blink and you'll miss it), and I love to visit. My only problem is that everybody knows your business. I don't like all the gossip or the fact everybody knows your name. There's a certain joy that comes with anonymity imo, so it would be equally appealing for me to hole up in London or Manhattan and disappear into a crowd.

Would love to live in a rural English hamlet... "Town" still feels quite large with all the social hierarchies that come with it...

Would love to grow banana trees too... But maybe they're not suited to the rural English climate ...

I went in a bank yesterday. It was probably the first time in about five years.

I had buggered up my debit card by accidentally entering my Visa card PIN repeatedly when I was at the vet (#ADHD). The bank automatically froze my card thinking it was an attempt at fraud, so I had to go to the bank to unfreeze it. I walked straight to a teller and the whole thing took about seven minutes, mostly waiting for authorisation from the big boss to reactivate my card. It was fine except that I don't make eye contact and at one point I thought she was done with my card so I reached over the counter to put it back in my wallet. She wasn't done. I gave it back and felt stupid. Then I had to enter my new PIN a bunch of times on the little keypad thing and I couldn't read the instructions because I'm blind so I kept pulling the card out too early or leaving it in too long, and then it would time out. As usual, I assume she thought I was a freak.

I'm feeling like a superfreak everywhere I go lately.

Depends what's missing from the amenities, but now that town centre shops in the UK are closing down so much, there's not a lot of difference.

In theory there are more social opportunities in a city (because there are more people), but there's often a stronger vibe of alienation so it can be harder to make friends.

I live in a locality (too small to be considered a town).
I like that it's quiet and surrounded by nature (national park at the back, state forest at the front and neighbours so distant we need to use binoculars to wave at each other).
I like that we can do whatever the hell we like.
We are totally off grid, but that also means we need to manage energy use, water use and garbage disposal.
I don't like that there's no public transport except for the school bus and having to travel quite a distance to get to a reasonably large town.
There's a small town not too far away but services there are limited.
It does seem to have a lot of social events and arty/crafty/new agey festival/market type stuff though, as it's an historical town with a lot of quirk.

Technically, yes and maybe no to me.

My city isn't small enough to be considered a small town; my 'village' is too small to be considered a small town.

I'm politically involved in a very specific sector of my locale. But that's it.
It's not like I'm super famous or anything; but most people know most people.

Anything past that is networking between different 'villages' within the same city.
Not that I'm known nor vastly connected within those places at large, but I'm quite familiar enough to be a regular sight.

Doesn't mean some people do not get opportunistic or be one of those bastards.

I don't know what it is like to live in a major city.

I imagine it to be very crowded (because this country has higher population density in it's major cities)...

Only that it's very competitive, too high standards, technologically more advanced, cost of living more expensive (up to 3x), lots of economical divides, having more public transportation options...

I live in quite a large town that's broke down into really small areas and for the life of me I don't even know the name of the small area I live in because there are so many of them and I'm pretty sure the borders have changed over time so I just use the big town name for correspondence purposes

I'm also from a main city in the UK that is part of an even bigger main city

I used to always wanna live somewhere small where everyone knows each other but as I got older and less interested in wanting to be around people I just was happy to disappear in a larger town

But these days I'm kinda liking socialising again and putting myself out there and getting to know people again so I'll opt for the small town again

I like to be out in the countryside with small towns or even small cities within easy reach.

I've lived in small and medium cities, I don't think I'd do that again. I've spent enough time in London to know I don't ever want to live there.

I cannot stand it here where I live!! !

I am truly in the "middle of nowhere" with nothing but houses and ranches

The closest towns are only 15 minutes away though which helps make living here more tolerable

I'm happy in big cities and in remote wildernesses.

I lived in a small town for work for a few months. It was stifling. I think it was the complete lack of anything or anyone weird. No alternative art, fashion, music or lifestyles. I hated it so much I moved back to the city and commuted out to work instead.

I lived in small towns my entire life and HATED it. Nothing to do, nowhere to go, VERY closed minded people. It's like the song "In my little town there's a rainbow but all of the colors are black. It's not that the colors aren't there, it's just imagination they lack"
