Whooopie! It is autism acceptance month. Is anyone so naive to believe that having 1 month a year (or all 12 months for that matter) where we attempt to education the public about autism and telling them to accept us will really make a difference and that they will no longer think we are weird, and we will never again have trouble finding romantic partners because they will all know to accept us.

Or am I the naive one and this stuff really works?

Oh and -- it's April because it's because some influential enough psychologist's autistic son's birth month.
And was backed and declared by a US president.

In my country, it's supposedly January.

I suppose it depends on how well they run their propaganda machine, and on who they're really doing it for.

I won't be bothering with it. I have ethical objections to propaganda even at the best of times. And I don't like these designated special months and days. Except for Talk Like A Pirate Day, and even that's not as much fun as it used to be.

Too bad they don't have dress like a pirate day, that would give all of us an excuse to cut our left leg off at the knee and poke our right eye out.

I think it's an attempt to educate people and call attention to it. I've been posting informative stuff on my FB timeline

Nothing wrong with that IMO, but I'd rather they did it all year round.

They do, it's September 19th.

I'm naive enough to believe it can help at least a little bit. But like many things lately, I think that they serve more to help validate and encourage those already in that sphere. I'm autistic, have a history of caring for people even mental illness, and have no awareness that I am myself autistic until very recently. So that's a good example of the awareness being lost. Still, I like the community that may develop from it.

What's something we can each do to help with autism awareness month? I would like to do something to feel internally consistent, so I welcome any suggestions.

It’s unclear what is meant by acceptance

How can you not accept something that is present in reality ie I accept the sky is not green

I accept I was diagnosed with ASD, I’m not frantically looking to challenge that, is anyone?

That autism is not a disorder? They cannot do this because it is a disorder and disability for many, this isn’t disputed as they cannot exist and survive in the world without help.

I remember old racist signs in history books saying “ no blacks no Irish”

I’ve yet to see one saying “no autistic people please”

So who’s doing the accepting?

We are asking neurotypicals to accept autistic people as they are via education on what autism is, etc. Plenty of people are aware of autism, but not too many understand it.

Did you see people online posting videos of themselves making fun of autistic people or pretending to be autistic when they weren't?? That sounds very messed up of them.

AKA Autism awareness, but acceptance is a rather different term.

Haha, that's good lol.

Reminds me of the time I officially revoked Elon Musk's autism, I have the official papers to prove it.
