I have to stim a lot. I used to get made fun of for flapping my hands. I don't do it anymore. In public I just rub my fingers together or move them.

At home I like to spin in circles, rock, or pace. Sometimes I want to do those things in public but don't want a strange reaction.

My public stims and at home stims are really no different from another.

Sometimes I rock or pace slowly but it’s not noticeable to others. I move my leg when sitting as well…the bouncing of my leg. That’s only noticeable by others if the chair is attached to others and the bouncing causes vibration. That is usually hidden by a table. As an adult I’m mindful of all of this and can stop it at will. As needed. It’s more like a coping thing to deal with extra sensory experiences.

Sometimes I carry a pocket sensory object too but I don’t need these things often because my dogs keep me occupied. Snuggling with them is the greatest stress relief for me. They seem to understand that too. Wise pups. :)

I try to not stim in public, but it's hard. Thankfully I get to move a lot while I work and it's loud there, so I can vocal stim and tic quietly to myself, and I get to sway from side-to-side while I work without it being too weird. Sometimes I flap my arms/hands at work, but not often and people don't really care anymore. I do sway excessively and swing my arms while talking to people sometimes, which is the most embarrassing thing I do at work. I also do get in trouble for getting out of my spot a lot, because I can't stand still and I work in a production facility (but I've managed to figure out tasks to go quickly do and times to do them, to where management just ignores it unless I do it excessively).

At home I do all of those things without stopping myself and pace around my room/the house without stopping myself. I also have a lot of stim toys to play with.

I'm more likely to do hand and wrist flapping stims at home.
