Hey I was wondering if theres something that NTs seem to have no problem with 99.99% of the time that you just cant do (like for me in was always bikeriding... oh and swimming when I was younger but I have scence learned to do that quite good, well as long as its just the normal style I suck with all the others.)

Edit: On second though I should have added the word can to the topic.

I can ride my bike just fine. Actually, I like going on long bike rides! I had mounds of trouble learning how to ride a bike when I was a kid, though. I also enjoy swimming. Be careful not to generalize. It's rare to find a thing all aspies are bad at unless it's one of the required diagnostic criteria for Asperger's syndrome.

Small talk.
Flirting.
Mutually challenging situations like arguing/negotiating/bargaining.
Physically I can't really balance myself - though I can ride bikes and drive/park/swim ok - though not especially well.

I can ride my bike decently enough. I do have trouble riding it up hills, but I think that has more to do with my weight than my AS. In fact, I think that's true of a lot of my physical shortcomings.

On the other hand, I never seem to be able to walk the "right" way. People tell me to walk heel-toe and to keep my legs straight, and I try but I still don't get it right. People sometimes wonder why I'm "limping".

I actually remember the day I learned to ride a bike. I was 6 when got the bike and spent the entire day learning to ride the thing. It took all day but by that evening I was riding around like crazy. I never used training wheels or had any help from someone else either. I remember being extremely proud of myself for that effort. A couple months later I was riding motorcycles (one of my first loves besides computers).

I suck at learning more than one thing at a time though. When learning something new I focus so completely on it that I can't do anything else. I have a hard time eating, sleeping, or doing anything other than the one thing I am focused on. This is fairly annoying because NT's don't seem to do this and can just jump around to whatever. This has caused me much trouble back when I was in school and currently in work because I can't refocus on what I am supposed to be doing. I tend to be very good at the things I apply myself to though. "Intelligent, but an under-achiever" to quote WarGames.

Driving. I space out and run red lights and stop signs, so it is better for me and everyone else that I just don't do it.

I don't have any problem bicycling -or- swimming. But, anyways, here's a list of the stuff I -do- have trouble with:

Posture (I always slouch, but then, slouching -can- look cool)
Flirting
Concentration
Following stringent, detailed orders to the letter
Being nice to people who don't deserve it.
Tolerating my younger brother acting stupid.
Doing math problems. Math is incredibly hard for me

I can't hold the pen the "right" way to save my life. The little triangular pencil thingies my teachers made us use in grade school hurt my hand.

I always tend to hold pencils with a death gripe.

On the first day of fourth grade I wrote non-stop from 9am till noon hour. My hand was so cramped from that day.

I've never been able to ride a bike. I just can't get it going at all.

I have a funny gait and my two sons (both diagnosed with autism) share it.

I'm afraid of heights.

I am clumsy.

I have unreadable handwriting, no matter how hard I try.

I don't suck at bikeriding. I never had a problem learning, and before I was 5 I was biking all over the place just fine.

I was bad at swimming when I was younger, but if I practiced got strong and fit and stuff now I could be pretty good. It's mainly the breathing in freestyle which I have a problem with. The rest is fine.

I am useless at tree climbing, too. I climed the trees here alot, but I think the main problem with my tree climbing was a fear of heights/falling.

That's not related to AS.. although alot of the things in this thread aren't really.

My hadwriting is usually messy, no matter how hard I try and make it neat. I think that has more to do with ADD though.

I'm not going to speak for all aspies at all, but I am pretty bad at some of the things other people have mentioned. I'll write my own short list, including things that I think might be most closely related to Asperger's syndrome and other neurological differences (e.g., unusual brain lateralization). A few probably aren't neurological per se (of course, one could argue that every ability goes back to the brain), so I threw them in just for fun.

  • Tying knots (learning how to tie my shoes was enough!)
  • Learning dance steps
  • Conversing with groups of people instead of one on one
  • Knowing when I have passed the boundary between acquiantance and friend and how to get there
  • Whistling
  • Not being long winded when explaining something
  • Being firm instead of overly understanding with people
  • Staying focused on things of no interest to me
  • Not being bored so often
  • Speaking Hindi/Urdu/Bengali
