I have seen this in my own pets, and occasionally in others' pets. Usually I just assume we are more likely to be ourselves with animals, not pretending to be nice to them, I guess it's easier to be honest to animals and they do seem to react in the same manner. Cats, dogs, and horses are less likely to be deceived by our emotional honesty, and in the sense of pack animals, even an equal. This is where we are likely to see companion comfort from animals in general. My Mom is caring for a cat that loves me- gets extra excited around me and MUST be given attention when I visit, simply from hearing my voice.
The other hand- I've had my my lip split by a jealous dachshund, (his owner fancied me) and skittish animals are defensive with most everyone anyway.
