I use an alarm clock when I worry that I may not wake up on my own within a certain time frame, or when I have only a couple of hours to sleep before I need to get up again.
I found an alarm that makes several beeps, pauses, repeats the combination again just a little bit louder, on & on until it's pretty loud.
I agree that it's quite unpleasant to be jarred awake.
I often wake up on my own though, get up, walk around the house a bit and usually go back to bed to wait for the alarm clock to go off.
One thing I really despise at work are the nurses, aides and anyone else who walks into a patient's room, WHIPS on the lights while loudly exclaiming 'GOOD MORNING!"
Talk about insensitive!
If I work the early shift, either starting at 5am or 6am, I walk into the patient's room, get all my stuff set up with just the hallway light coming in or other ambient light.
Sometimes the patient wakes up, mostly they do not if they are actually asleep.
I then try to gently wake them up, which is hard to do for the older folks who are hard-of-hearing.
Sometimes I gently touch them on shoulder, even rocking them softly if needed.
I ALWAYS ask a patient about turning on the light... since I'm about to stick them with a needle, they are usually all-to-happy to have a light on!
In the army, they like to have this explosion of lights and shouting in basic training to get everyone up... SHOCK AND AWE!
