Laughing at things not funny to other people.

I often amuse myself with my thoughts. I think of cartoon images of things but cannot make other people see the humor in them. Some things such as stuffed animals and babies make me laugh for some reason I can't explain. I went out to lunch with another aspie friend who was also a woman and there was a baby at the next table and we both laughed at the baby. I hate to use the word "stim" but it appears that some things just have that affect on me. Does anyone else laugh at things that are not funny to other people?

Everytime I go to a movie, have a conversation with someone, or watch some stand up comedy, its quite normal you know, not everyone thinks the same thoughts.

I seem to have the opposite problem. Other people tend to laugh at things I find repugnant (like racist jokes) or stupid and I'm left wondering what they find so amusing.

I have the same thing happen sometimes. Once in college the tutor was talking about how guitars make unusual noises when they're held up to lights, and I started thinking of guitars making every random noise possible. I couldn't stop giggling for ages after that!

I always laugh when somebody mentions something vaguely because so many humorous images pop into my mind of what they could mean... or if things are not worded correctly. Others might giggle, but I find it hilarious.

I used to laugh at my son when he was first born. I wasn't doing it to be mean, but to me, he looked a bit like Mr. Magoo.

Yep, I'm either laughing at things others don't find funny, or I'm not laughing at what others find funny or I'm just a tad late on getting the punchline. Story of my life. LOL

Ha Ha when I was at school we had to watch a film which was suppose to be funny everyone laughed at the funny bits except me I just thought the lead character was a prat but I laughed at one thing in that but no one else in the class understood what the joke was about in the film except me.

Heh, ya, i dont think its a stim at least for me. Ill tell ya a very quick insane story, only because I dont know what it means.

WHen I was 12, my dad had this magazine, and their was a small picture of Albert Einstine on the bottom left courner, for some inexplicable reason I started laughing like crazy, for about 5 mins. I dont know what was funny, probably some chemical imbalance temporarily. LAter in life I heard it was possible we may have shaired the same disorder, and that kinda freaked me out a bit.

Heh To this day I still think about it and tell ppl on here about it every now and then, my parents at the time thought I was insane.

it is usually visual humor....

and whenever i try to explain it to ppl... the only humor they find is my randomness

i thought most of Sleep Hallow by Tim Burton hilarious....(espeically when the evil stepmother got a kiss from the headless (then headed) horseman, and evey time Icabad got freeked out)
also i love physical comedy like Mr. Bean.

most of the things my family laughs at, i don't laugh at....and what i do, they don't....it is odd....but hey i have a different view of funny. (and i find comedians confusing)

I have had a problem with smiling and giggling(not full on laughing, but something kinda in between) at the wrong times.

It's usually when someone is relating a story about something that bothers them or has caused them grief.

One example...

A lady who was my supervisor at another lab I worked at once, used to invite me over to hang out. She was around my age, and I just figure she liked the company because she didn't seem interested in me for intimate reasons.

Anyway, one of those times when I was at her house she related a story about her father and how mean he was to her.
According to this lady, her dad was trying to teach her to tell time when she was young.
She wasn't getting it right, so her father "smashed my face into the clock", she said.

It was at that moment I smiled and let out a 'giggle', or maybe chuckle is a better word.

She was really hurt and I don't know why I did it. I didn't find it funny that her dad treated her this way and that he did that specific thing to her. I wasn't laughing like one would at a joke or a funny scene in a movie.

I've done that many other times. Sometimes I think I've been able to hide it or pass it off as something else so no one says anything or seems to notice... or so I hope.

It sucks, because I don't like to be thought of as uncaring or insensitive.

One thing is that I laugh really hard when other people get in trouble. I don't find it funny; I just start laughing.

I have worked in the medical field off-and-on for many years in different capacities, but always involving direct patient contact.
Although this has never cost me a job or gotten me in real bad trouble, I know I have lost the respect of some co-workers over time.

I can usually get away with calling it "morgue humor" which is the dark humor medical folks use to get through a stressful event.
Firemen and police officers do it too.

Trouble is, I do it away from work where it is much more noticeable.

me too. and i really want to explain to people why they should be laughting too, but i try not to.

All the time. I have been called insensitive, but usually I am not laughing at what people think I'm laughing at. It's hard to explain. OTOH, I have had people cracking up with laughter over something that upset me. Go figure.

The thing is, I love high-brow humour... stuff with much more complex thought to it, rather than just a simple one.

A fart may be a tiny bit funny, or just plain stupid.... but when timed perfectly in the middle of a complex story buildup like when two diplomats were negotiating for a surrender, one lifted himself up in his saddle and farted, saying "take THAT back to your master!" MUCH funnier because of the extra implications and absurdity!


The more utterly ridiculous something is, the more I find it hilarious (while the simpletons just find it "stupid" because they don't get the extra layer of humour...)



Hey.... shining moment of clarity! NT's have the "extra layer" in day-to-day conversation.
Aspies have the "extra layer" in OTHER means of communication/media/art/etc. Whoa duuude.....
