Has anyone ever spent time thinking about the word "Asperger"? Most of us know it is the name of the Austrian Doctor who observed our type of behavior back in the 1940's. However fast forward 60ish years. Some people make fun of words jus because the are fun. the pronunciation of "Asperger" is (ass-per-jer). To some the "p" sound can become a "b" and the "jee" (G) sound become hard as in 'green' Now we have "ass-burger". I got made fun of for simply mentioning the condition back in high school. heard things like: 'whoa! Chad's an ass burger" or "what an ass burger". I doubt im the only one to notice this. If you recall back in Hans Asperger's day there was another doctor/scientist by the name of Leo Kanner, who identified a simillar set of symptoms as Asperger did. Why dont we refer to it as "Kanner's Syndrome"? There is a much lower chance of being ridiculed if we use that name. instead of calling us Aspies (ass peas) or (ass pies), we could go by "Kannerite" or "Kannerians"

What Do You Think Fellow Kannerites? :)

The problem with that is that Kanner's autism refers to the more classical view of autism, of a more "low-functioning" autistic. Kanner's and Asperger's are generally considered to describe different ends of the autistic spectrum.

Ugh. That sounds too much like "catamite." And I actually think "Kannerian" sounds like "canary."

I think Kanner described the low functioning autism and Asperger the 'high' functioning autism (though I know there is the debate about HFA and AS).
So I think the Kanner name is already taken and not appropriate for us.
I read some time ago that the whole syndrome was being redescribed under another term though but can't remember the url.

after i posted thst i thought "hmm, kannerite. undiscovered space rock?"
i see what everyone is getting at, but asperger's leaves us too open to ridicule, especially when many of us have difficulty reading the emotions/intentions of others, just a thought

Kanner's patients were not what's currently defined as low-functioning, and in fact "Kanner's autism" used to be near-synonymous with "high-functioning autism". (I don't believe in that distinction, personally, but I'm just reporting usage.)

Some of Asperger's patients had speech delays and most or all would now by official criteria be diagnosed with autistic disorder (a.k.a. Kanner autism) rather than Asperger's syndrome.

Follow the link What does "Kanner" actually mean historically to read a prior analysis I did of Kanner's paper as opposed to what an "expert" on TV claimed "Kanner" meant.

The "g" in German is a hard "g," as in "grrr." (I took German for several years from Germans.) Asperger is never pronounced Asperjer.

I think thechadmaster has a good thought. All groups would like to be able to control what they are called. Ask the quakers who call themselves Friends etc. I don't think there's anything we can do about it. Around people who have no idea what Asperger's means, I say I'm a little bit autistic, so the next time I see you I might not recognize you, so please help me out by introducing yourself every time we meet. Thank you.
In school, if it isn't ass-burger, it'll be something else, as people who are deathly afraid of being different enough to be kicked out of the troop commit a first strike to push someone else out.

The Amish don't have a problem with what they are called and neither do I. It's like belonging to a special group within society.

kanners syndrome is not just low functioning autism-it includes mf and hf autism,in fact, some people use classic autism as a label for LFAers, and kanners autism for mf and hfers.

why would aspergans want to use a label [kanners] when it wasn't leo who researched aspergers?

autistic pyschopath.
ask steve [member here,or anyone else with the knowledge] about what was really meant by pyschopathy,as he once described it here.
it is not meaning pyschopath.

I like to call it "Ass-Burgers" myself, it makes me laugh at the absurdity that is my life. I don't think of "me" as an Ass-Burger but I think of my mind as the Ass-Burger.

If you are dealing with this as your reality you are better served by having a sense of humor about it and appreciating the positive aspects of the syndrome. Somebody calling me names is really the least of my problems. I was actually thankful when people called me names because of the way I think, it alerted me to who they really were. I knew not to bother with those kind of people anymore and I could focus my energy on people who were true friends instead.

Fitting in with the masses is way overrated! Sheeple suck.
