What's up everyone. My name Dan from Tampa, FL and I'd like to get some opinions from y'all if I am an aspie or NT. I understand the only way to know 100% is to get a diagnoses, but this study is only for my own curiousity. This is all very confusing for me, so if you all wouldn't mind taking a moment of your time to help me out based on your experiences, it would be very appreciated.

My interests include skateboarding, golf, and learning about beliefs, dating and relationships, and applied psychology, but don't have any interests that don't have anything to do with anything like license plate numbers.

5'9 155 Lbs, 20 yrs old, athletic build.

Been guilty of obsessing over skateboarding and golf....

also dating dynamics, and psychology (only for the purpose of finding fulfillment in life), and putting these things above all other priorities like family, friends, and God.

Been called a social misfit and off-beat, but also have been described as thoughtful, passionate, and normal.

I frequently take social initiaitve and find it is not wanted.

I went to Florida State for a year and a half, and dropped out because I had problems getting along socially with my peers.

I am not sensative to light or any kind of noise.

I see myself unusually mature and responsible for my age, but I have always had a problem socializing and effectively communicating in social situations.

Have no problem with eye contact.

Do have the ability to make people laugh with me (no at me) and have been called charming at times, and I also the ability to be sarcastic. I do not take everything literally.

I have the ability to "read" people but for some odd reason lack the ability to judge if my actions are being constructive or destructive toward any given environment. This causes many situations where I do not get what I want not becasue I couldn't read people, but becasue I couldn't anticipate the effect my action, or lack of, would have on the environment. Anyone who has experienced this knows it can eat you heart out and leave you emotionally crippled. I experience this everyday and it kills me!! !! !! !! agghhh!! !! !! If I can solve this or cure this, my quality of life would skyrocket!! !! !!

Main struggles include communication, communication, and communication.

Well, there a few descriptions of myself and how I relate to the world. Again, all opinions, constructive criticism (I can recieve this also without taking offense), and comments are appreciated and will seriously be considered.

You could have a very mild form of AS. That's what I have.

If it is AS, it is very mild and from what you say, I don't think you would meet the criteria for a diagosis.

I don't know if you sound like you have Aspergers to me(thats my opinion) mainly because

1- you said get sarcasm
2- you do make eye contact
3- you've been known to be friendly, thoughtful and passionate.
4- your not sensative to light or any kind of noise. (even though you could be on the spectrum and not have any sensory problems with lights or noise)
5- you said you can read people

You do sound like you have a social anxiety of some kind though. If you do have Aspergers though, it'll probably be very mild. There are people on the spectrum, especially with Aspergers who can make eye contact, and who get sarcasm, and have been known to be friendly and sweet. So Its kind of up in the air, but to me it sounds like a social phobia, or anxiety.

You sound like you have the traits. I can't judge you for sure because I don't know you. If I was never diagnosed I would be suspecting I might have it and then think I don't have it.

i think having problems with eye contact is key, i don't think you have aspergers if you have no problem with this. but it's hard to tell by only what you write.

I agree with age1600 and most of the others:

1- you said get sarcasm

I get most now, but even then fail.

2- you do make eye contact

It really does seem like Aspies/auties avoid it.

3- you've been known to be friendly, thoughtful and passionate.

With me, this is mostly an act, and that is were autism gets its name from.

4- your not sensative to light or any kind of noise. (even though you could be on the spectrum and not have any sensory problems with lights or noise)

I think everyone has sensitivity problems

5- you said you can read people

The lack of non verbal language is like the main symptom.

you say you can't "anticipate the effects"

is it because you do things BEFORE THINKING about the possible effects or because you really have trouble knowing the right thing to do socially? like if someone explained to you what you had done wrong, would you instantly understand?

you could have AD(H)D, because it can cause similar problems. the main difference are that the social problems are more due to impulsivity or not thinking things through rather than not understnading things all the way...

What were you like as a child? Reading early? Not playing well with other children? Strange interests? The symptoms you described did seem more like social anxiety and/or AD(H)D, but coping can be quite elaborate and advanced in AS adults. Read more about AS childhoods, and see how that fits.
