For me social anxiety or phobia is like being a Chiuahaha surrounded by tons of Mastiffs...

Sometimes, it's almost like I'm hideous looking, like everyone can see all my flaws.

I feel like everyone else is moving fast and I'm in slow motion and it's noticable to everyone.

Like a person who has committed a heinous act and is to be punished by law.

I don't know what is going on and can't think quickly enough to keep up

I put headphones on and ignore people if I have to walk through town
At work I avoid coffee time and large groups and go to the canteen jsut before it closes

I don't really get anxiety, but I've used many metaphors to describe my general social pacifism.

- Like I'm watching a movie, a passive observer simply watching everything going on around me.

- Like I'm inside a bubble.

- Like I'm a fish out of water, on a planet where water doesn't exist.

Or if anyone of you have toured Gettysburg, there's a huge mural of the battle. Then the guide points out that the artist drew himself in the painting. The artist is depicted as a lone man, under a tree just sitting there. He's not participating in the battle, and basically detached from the swirling melee around him. I'M HIM.

A general sense of unease, confusion and elevated breathing. A strange numbness can also come over me, kind of a paralyzing effect. If it gets worse I'll get panicky, flushed and not be able to think properly. Sometimes my gut may act up too.

Like I'm ugly and weird and if I stick around too long they're all gonna notice. I always feel like I'm the most conspicuous, strangest looking/acting/talking person in any situation. Also when I leave stores I always think they are going to stop me and accuse me of stealing something.

Do you know who Amy Sedaris is? How can anyone top her? Check her out on youtube and her video promoting her book on Amazon and then just think how people are always happy to see Amy Sedaris so why should anyone mind seeing you walk into the store? Can you make your roll your pupil into the upper right hand corner of your eye?

It's like being suffocated - I have to escape before I can breath again.

Like it must be obvious I've just stepped out of my comfort zone, while everyone else is clearly still in theirs.

It's like I'm on some sort of social blacklist. If people don't already have the memo when I meet them, they'll surely receive it eventually.

It's like drowning - it takes so much effort and all my energy to stay afloat, unless I can get out of there fast.

That used to happen to me a lot, but now I no longer have to go to places or events that have me all hemmed in with
no way out.
