I do, and I wish I never signed up.
I would bet most of us ASers hate facebook because if you are like me, it totally rubs our loneliness right in our face.
It's like being stuck perpetually in HS, overhearing this person and that persons plans for the weekend, while you have NOTHING to do socially.

I am seriously contemplating cancelling my facebook account.
I have 145 or so facebook friends.
None of them are friends, most are just pass-by acquaintances from college, a few from high school, and some family.
Further, in the past, if I wanted to stop being around some so called "friend" who just was using me as their b***h, I could.
Now, with FB, it is harder both to avoid them (since I can't always control temptations and have to see their page), and by seeing how great everybody else is doing in life...it makes me SOOOOO desperate.

I feel like without facebook, I am sheltered from the reality of being a 26 year old loner.
On the other hand....I don't know if I should be sheltered from this...maybe I need a dose of reality...on the other hand...maybe not sheltered but not have it "thrown" in my face so heartbreakingly.

The reason I don't cancel is because I feel it may hurt my future efforts to connect with people (after all when you meet a new friend...hahaha...strange concept...you "permanently" connect this way).
Also, I have a few acquaintances on there I might want to correspond with in the future. Me leaving facebook would make it harder to do so, and it might be a signal to them I am "weird" or full of "drama".
I further have family, mother and siblings, who would like to know why too.

So I'm stuck in that "wish I never signed up because it makes me suicidally depressed yet now that I have signed up cancelling would make me look weird to the 5 or so acquaintances I have (cut your nose to spite your face)."

I have never signed up for Twiiter, Facebook or Myspace. I just hated the concept an idea. I was never really a social butterfly. And thinking about it makes me anxious.
Talking to all these people who I can't connect to. And I look like a complete shuddin compared to them. Yeah.

Actually I would like it if somebody would take "custody" of my facebook account.
Only allowing me to access it in an urgent event.
This way, I could avoid raising suspicion amongst family and aquantenses/the public by deleting, I would still have it as a future resource...but would NOT have the ability to self-mutuliate by going on there.

It's like a dog, I need the lampshade because for a 26 year old lonely ASer, just veer.

lol.

Like put into prison. And then they put on your FB: Facebook Cuffs.

You'd probably need some social butterfly to take over and take custody of your account.

I hate Facebook and its Russian analogue "Vkontakte.ru" too. I have accounts at both, but I use them very rare. I hate that many people around me use it as only way to communicate.
One time I have missed the meeting of classmates, because they send me an invitation at Facebook and thought that it is enough. I found this message a week after that meeting, and was VERY angry. "Hey, people, there is such nice thing - a mobile phone, do you know about it?"
I don't delete my accounts, because facebook and vkontakte are often used to discuss something related with studies, for example to discuss our schedule. So if I will delete account, I would be totally dropped out of taking part in such decisions.

I think I prefer to have my accounts where I can discuss particular topics, not all mixed at one site.
For example, here I discuss some psychological things, I have also an account at special site where I can submit my poems and stories, a community about lucid dreams...
I like to use ICQ and Skype as well.

I like facebook. It's good to keep in touch with your old school mates and family. I have my cousin on there and my brother. I have lot of my internet friends on there and people from here and my old school mates.

I only approve people if I know who they are. The rest I ignore.

I like Facebook, though there are aspects of it that annoy me. I hate Myspace.

It always eluded me somehow why displaying my opinions and activities in log book form to complete strangers should be an appealing thing.
Then again - i do not have a big circle of friends that is hard to keep in contact with and i see the appeal of fb to people who do.

I am not much a fan of the "immediacy" and "close to real life-ness" of the likes of facebook or twitter.
I certainly see the importance of communication tools like these when it comes to free speech and how to circum-navigate f.ex. the censoring of some governments.

The newspaper article that disclosed how employers monitor their employees on facebook and how future employers sieve through the applications by checking out a person's fb account also convinced me not to join.
Having said that - I received numerous email notifications that people i know added me as friends - errrrrm, the next day i asked them and told them that i do not have a fb account.
They said: "Yes, you do."
I tried to follow this up and got as far as finding out that it had to do with me being stupid enough to open a Google account. which with some people led to automatically being added to facebook, 8O .
You what? Why don't you just come over and run my life for me?

As much as Internet web sites have made my social life explode by helping me connect to other people I might have something in common with, these "social networking" websites like Twitter and Facebook are just bad ideas I can't believe actually caught on and have the volume of traffic that they do.

Why do you want your personal life on the Internet for everyone to see? I know people who lost jobs because of something fairly innocent published on Facebook. Maybe for people obsessed with tracking down people they knew once in life but could not bother to keep in touch with Facebook is worth joining for, but when I look at the time people put into it...that's time you could spend doing something much more worthwhile.

This is why you don't post personal information online.

I love Facebook and Twitter. I can communicate much better with them.

I love Facebook. Please feel free to friend me there; just say you saw my profile here so I'll know you're not some nut who's mad about something I wrote on a political site.

I can sympathize with folks who feel like Facebook rubs social isolation in their faces. I felt that way for a very long time. I still do sometimes.

Cheers,

TH

I hate FB too, but for completely different reasons.

A bunch of strangers happens to see your name and add you as "friend" because they want a huge collection of "friends". Not that "friend" on Fb has anything to do with friendships at all, but it's soo important to collect them.
If you're stupid enough to accept their offer, thinking it the easiest way out, they'll bombard you with BS invitations and causes. You can't sniff at any games there without your "friends" starting to "help" you out and ask for your "help" in their own games. The first time I was asked for money, I didn't even get that it was a game, so I turned it down in a panic.

The place is a mess and it's near imposssible to find the things you'd actually might be interested in, and if you do find them, it's not much to them at all.

It's shallow, messy and boring. Not my kind of thing.
If it hadn't been for a pen-pal writing about all the fun we could do there and things she wanted to show me, I never would've joined in the first place. I never was interested to begin with, it didn't sound like my kind of thing.

I deleted my account earlier this year, as I never used the BS anyway and never responded to anything and was fed up with all the reminders of what people had sent me that I had yet to respond to. "X has celebrated Chinese new years with you" and a bunch of other stupid stuff.
No, we didn't celebrate Chinese new years together, or even by ourselves. Ridiculous thing, FB.
I don't get the attraction at all.

I add people to my pal pad on Global Pokedex Plus without questioning it, and ask other people's dragons to be friends with mine on Dragonadopters, and find them both great fun, but Fb. No thanks.

I have never signed up to facebook, twitter or myspace or any other social networking sites.
I did once sign up to a penpals website, a few people did write on my wall and PMs, also I had a stalker and she was so annyoing, so I deleted the account.
I do not usually fit on forums either, but on this forum it is going okay so far I think .

Facebook is good, but its kind of depressing sometimes. As a single person, I personally don't like seeing someone switch from single to being in a relationship. Not that I don't want them to get together, but just seeing other people hook up while your still searching can be a headache. The news they give out can also be terrible when they post that a terrible event happened, their depressed, or that they failed a test. Sometimes it be best to just check the email account or the notification bar to see who commented or tagged you.
