I felt the same way, not quite Aspie enough to be Aspie. I told my shrink this. But I did have autistic tendencies. So he now thinks it's PDD-NOS. :)

How old are you? My son's developmental ped said that pdd-nos is a childhood dx.

My husband was saying after our son's dx that he also had pdd-nos, but the dr said that he couldn;t. At some point before the age of 8 or so, it would become either one of three things: aspergers, high functioning autism, or no dx.

A PDD-NOS diagnosis usually means that you didn't quite fit one of the criteria for "Autistic disorder" or AS. But you're still part of the extended family. :)

Does that mean you will change your profile to 'other autism spectrum disorder.' :D

PDD-NOS term is a nonsense, though not much more so than Aspergers. Asperger's arose many years ago out of Hans Asperger's observations (nothing wrong with that). It has broadened a bit since then, however not all expert will agree the exact definition. Though an increasing number of sensible exerts are arguing there is little point to ring-fence terms like Asperger's, NLD, PDD-NOS because they add nothing and are rather one dimensional and the spectrum is in multi-dimensions and propose characterizing people in terms of ASD. The old terms don't attempt explain things relative to the autistic spectrum but rather are a set of arbitrary criteria. In fact, while I'm often referred to as Asperger's by the consultants in my latest diagnosis they used the ASD terminology in the documents deliberately.

Anything 'Not Otherwise Specified' is an inadequate diagnosis, if a diagnosis at all. PDD-NOS is particularly a nonsense because it doesn't specify what Pervasive Development Disorder it is. It doesn't have to be related to autism at all. Some people, including some doctors think of things like PDD-NOS, NLD as a sort of Asperger’s lite. This is not accurate and has never been accurate. PDD-NOS diagnosed person can the full rage of severity as it specifies very little. NLD can have a range of severity as it also is merely a criteria ring fence. I would have to question the judgement of somebody issuing the PDD-NOS diagnosis given that a diagnosis is only there because it is definable and it serves a purpose.

I think in children and difficult case a label of 'a PDD' should be available until which time they can rule out other disorders such as schizophrenia, etc or establish the various co-morbids. It should never be used a final diagnosis or replacement for case notes.

Back on the ASD (and co-morbids) train, it is far more fruitful to try find out which areas affect you most and what lifestyle is best for you. You only have to spend a few minutes on this site to see that no Aspie is a carbon copy of another.
