My teenage daughter talks about names all the time. If someone we know names their kid a name she does not like. She will go on and on about it. My poor niece is about to have a baby, and I'm afraid to tell her the name for having to listen to her go on about it for days!! !

I used to have a real interest in names. I basically read baby name books cover to cover, LOL. I could tell you the country of origin of practically any name. Unfortunately I have forgotten most of my (useless?) knowledge...

To this day, though, when I am stuck for a convo topic, I'll often ask people what their favorite names are. Like Xan said, I like words. I like sounds, I guess.

I have a thing about words in general. Sometimes I just can't stop talking about a word that sounds strange for me at the moment. I like to know the origin, if there's another use for that word in my language or another. My friends have said it's one annoying obsession, but, I can't tell if it's an obsession or a hobby. That happens a lot with names, too. It must be because they are easy to track. I'm not sure how my parents feel about this, but I keep bugging them with these things.

One of my interests is the study of words and names. As an example,it fascinates me that
the name Andrew (Greek for 'manly') is related to Alexander (leader of men) and the
words android (like a man) and androgynous (like a man and a woman). The more I study words and names the more I can see connections and some kind of order amid the chaos of the everyday world !

I cannot remember names...that's my thing. I also hate nicknames or names ending with any kind of ie or y sound like emily, angie (my nickname...I hate it!) The 'y sound hurts my ears the way most pronounce it.

Yes! I have some names that I really like. For girls, Samantha and Katherine are my favorites. Samantha was my favorite cat, so it is obvious where that one comes from. Katherine is just a name I find pretty.

For boys, Roger is my favorite name. Two of my favorite athletes, Bannister and Federer, have that name.

I'm quite fascinated by names. I often find myself on babynames.com just looking at all the different names and their origins purely for fun and my own interest. I love names beginning with E, like Ethan, Eric, Ellery, Elisa, Espen, Ebony, etc. I don't really know why I have such a strong preference for "E" names. They all just sound nice. :D

I have an unbelievably difficult time remembering names... it's crippling socially. Not only do I have the troubles picking up social cues, it's REALLY bad when I can never remember a name to introduce people.. .even people I've known for a while.. I have to really think on it for a while and then I might remember their name..

Xan, I thought it must be an Aspie or NLD thing, but it isn't? I've bought numerous books on how to remember names, but nothing seems to really help.. Anyone else have this problem? and if so, does anything help? If it's not Aspie related, I wonder what it is then... anyway.. I sure would LOVE to be able to remember names, it would help me SO much in social situations where I'm already stumbling... if I could JUST remember their names..

Laura

I'm terrible at remembering people's names, but I like names in general. I have several baby name books, which I no longer cross-reference obsessively like I used to (look up one name, then all the names realted to it), but I still like to look at them.

All of my current indoor pets have names beginning with P. We didn't plan it that way; it was just how it worked out.

A baby name book was the first book I bought at Pathmark after I learned to read. I used to be fixated on the name Isaiah. Most recently, it has been Clemence and Clyde. I think it has to do with the way the letters line up. Did anybody else see Bernardo Bertolucci's Dreamers? There is a scene in the beginning where Michael Pitt's character realizes that the cigarette lighter's matches everything else's measurements in some way.

I am absolutely horrible at memorizing names! And faces, which makes things really hard sometimes. But anyway, I am a tiny bit like your daughter. I am very picky when it comes to names as well, but only for as long as I can remember them, which is not long at all. My current favorite name is Pollyanna, but it changes every year or so.
