I collected rocks religiously for several years until my focus switched. I still have boxes of them out in the shed. They're pretty, but I don't find the love that I had for them previously. I mean, when we went on vacations and got to go into interesting stores, I'd also end up getting a rock as my thing that I wanted to buy. I used to sit around and laboriously wash all of my rocks.

I mean, seriously . . . :) And let's not forget my obsession with Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . . . and the Little Mermaid. I think that there was a point in the 2nd grade where I watched that movie every night straight for about 6 months.

You?

This is your chance to talk about that that thing back in the day that no one else wanted to hear about.

My first one I think was "Heigh Ho." I watched the Disney Sing Along tape a lot when I was two and I think I wore it out because my mother had to repurchase it when I was 3.

Then the next thing I remember being obsessed about was Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland and of course bodily functions. I had a facination with my brother's dirty diapers because I always had to look at them after they were taken off of them. I was obsessed with The Little Mermiad too when I was 5 and 6 and my Barbie dolls. I think I was obsessed with my dollhouse when I was 6 and 7. I remember being obsessed with someone's last name when I was 7 because it gave me a funny picture in my head. I was obsessed with shorts when I was 5 because Christopher Robin wears them and he was my favorite character. I was obsessed with blowing noses too when I was 6, 7, and 8.

With me, it was time travel... Then space travel. Dinosaurs for a while. Werewolves. Then all sorts of cryptozoology.

I'm still obsessed with time travel.

OK - just a question. Why is this being called an obsession (negative connotation - bordering on the uncontrollable) when it could just as easily be a very positive thing such as an INTEREST. Yeah. People have interests. And it's good. And it's fine. And there's no pathology unless you hurt someone in the process.

These became *obsessions* because they were drilled into your little heads by mass-media hypnosis. Via TV. They drummed it into your brains. They made you feel bad if you didn't follow the trend. They sold you love in the guise of plastic and batteries. They filled the empty spaces with *fun and popularity* - glitz and entertainment. Entrainment is more like it.

My parents tell me that when I was really little, I would just sit there watching the weather channel for hours on end. But that one faded...it is the only aspie-obsession that faded for me. After that it was video games. That's been my obsession for 15 years and still going.

The first one I can remember was an intense obsession with apple pips! I had a box full of them!

Umm, to be honest, for most of us, our obsessions are just that, and are, by no way, the "norm" at the time. When has it ever been the "norm" for a 6 year old girl to be obsessed with frogs, down to the various types of frogs and toads, where each lived, what special features they had, their reproductive cycle, and on and on and on. If anything, my topics made me very UNpopular because they tend to be all I talk about or think about.

No "mass media hype" here. I assume you need a TV and to go to a public school where brand names can matter. Sorry to disappoint you but: no TV and I went to a Catholic school so that kind of undoes your "theory" that it is brainwashing.

You're right about that. I had some things that would border on some of the crazier stuff shown here, but I rather list the ones I am kind of proud of that were worthwhile, etc...

The one that endures today, cats. I have always liked animals of some sort. I liked horses and dogs, but cats were always my favorite. My parents had their first cat before I was born. She was an Angora mix named Tweety. The first cat who was my own cat was Samantha, my Lynx point Siamese. I have loved Siamese since I was very little. Who knew I would have three of my own, two Lynxes and a feral Snowshoe?

My first real obsession was Meteorology, more specifically, tornadoes. It all started when I saw the movie Twister. I saw it when I was 7, and it blew me away. I'm 18 now and I'm still completely fascinated and obsessed with tornadoes and I'd give ANYTHING to be a storm chaser.

The eponymous hero of the animated movie Balto, when I was 5 years old.
