Do you stim in front of other people? Or are you able to suppress it until you're by yourself? And I don't mean little stims, but more noticeable ones like rocking and the like.

Yeah, I have no problem doing so; my main stim is rocking. So, I've got a nice microfiber rocker recliner in my livingroom; I'll rock in the presence of friends; my closer friends know that I kind of need to rock, the rest I don't really mind. Depend on who it is, I may even be inclined to explicitly mention autism and stims and such; I'm more and more inclined to do that these days, as I seek for my friends and loved ones to understand me better. The recliner is known to be the only place I sit, so when I have friends over to do MST3k or something, they generally know not to sit in "my" chair, because I will eject them, sometimes quite rudely (which I usually apologize for and try to explain later).

Also, in meetings at work, the chairs kind of have a springy recline, and you can rock in them, and I do often, and thing little of doing so. But, on that part I must confess that the founder of my company is rather famous, and is known to be a rocker; and I will not hesitate to toss this out there if anybody gives me a hairy eyeball about it; though, admittedly, that rarely happens.

My LFA/MFA son is also an obsessive stimmer with rocking; he'll rock anywhere, and is rather oblivious to caring about it.

Good fortune,

- Icarus meditates while rocking...

I think I only stim in front of other people.
I don't like to, but I get really nervous in loud environments with a lot of people, so I frantically tap my feet and all this weird s**t.

Oh yeah all the time. I even dance. Can't help it. I pace, I dance, I wiggle around in the chair, I flip my hands around, I move things around on a table, line things up just so...been doing that all my life.

I did stim once this year during a class by rocking. It was a loooong class.

I try to contain it though so it's not an everyday occurance.

Yeah. Sometimes surreptitiously. Sometimes a little more obviously. All I know is, I get quite agitated when I'm trying to hold myself in check.

My stimming involves running my hands through my hair, so I can pull it off anywhere

Yes, I do. And until I found WP I had no idea what I was doing

I bounce my leg or twiddle my hair between my first and seccond fingers when there are other people around. It has been commented on:

Other Person: "What are you doing?"

Me: "Bouncing my knee/twirling my hair"

Other Person: "I can see that. Why?"

Me: "Feels good"

Other Person: *hard stare*

In future I shall tell them I'm stimming as it sounds like it could be rude 8)

Sometimes I find myself rocking in class without knowing it. But when I am very aware of other people I hold my hair and run my hand over it or tap all of my fingers against my thumb or make an alternating tapping pattern on a surface which makes it look like I am practicing some song on a piano but without the piano.

as a child my parents would condemn me as mad, deranged and shameful for my stims, so from an early age I developed the art of covert stimming. As I always grew up with a huge fear of being institutionalized (I soon was to be hospitalized with acute depression) I learned the art of simulating normality to such an extent, my reward has been to appear NT...Some reward.

Since my diagnosis 4 months ago, I have been liberating my stims from out the closet. HOW WONDERFUL.

So yes, I stim in the open now, it feels good & I am for the 1st time in my life, starting to live out that beautiful quote from Fassbinder. "It's better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not."

WOW. I feel a bit better doing it, but I don't thik I could say I do it just because it feels good. Also, I can certainly control it, though it may start at an unpredictable time. Outside of that last part, I would even hesitate to call it a stim.
