I've had a few sadistic teachers. It was more traumatizing that mean kids because the teachers were in positions of power. Sometimes, as an adult, I imagine cornering them and asking them how they can live with themselves, finding joy in traumatizing vulnerable kids?

yes!

At primary school I used to feel physically sick because I was so afraid of the teachers, one in particular seemed to have a vendeta. I think others were aware of this, I was moved out of his class into the class above but he still took the opportunity to come into that class and make me stand up and answer a stupid question or make some other comment to embarass me in front of everyone.

In secondary school a geography teacher took an instant hate towards me for no reason, would also embarass me in front of the class for not understanding questions, would let everyone else have a break pass then turn to me and just say in a nasty voice your not getting one without giving any reason.

Then is it a wonder that other kids feel justified in picking on us too!

I always liked my teachers. :) I was a complete goody-two-shoes most of the time, so they usually liked me, although I think they thought I was a bit strange. I vividly recall snuggling up to one of my teacher's legs in primary school (every day, for months), for some reason...although she tolerated it.

alexbeetle, I felt some surging anger when I read your post. I'll never stop being angry at bullying teachers.

I tried to get along with teachers. I certainly didn't want to invite their meanness. I guess I wasn't a cute enough kid.

One thing has been quite motivational though, another teacher was angry at me for doing a free choice project on Australian animals as he said it was stupid to do a project on animals in a country I would never ever visit (I guess he thought I would never amount to much...).
So now I have a goal to visit Australia to prove him wrong, which means I have to do well at my career and save up for the trip!

I think I just had really nice teachers... it probably says more about them than me.

Nope.

I even had one teacher who I'd interrupt his lectures almost on a daily basis to correct (and then later i'd bring in proof that I was right.) He once took me aside to tell me he was glad I did that, and said he had been the same way in school.

Though i've heard that when he had my younger sister 7 years later he told her I was always wrong and he was the right one

I had very cruel ones. To make matters bad and worse, they all came into my life when I was impressionable, young and bleeding from childhood traumas. I had no choice but to comply and go to school. After 13 I was a free agent and never returned, choosing to self-teach in the School of Hard Knocks of Life. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for repeating the same grade many times over and over. <doh>

A few come to mind. When in 3rd grade, my younger sister was prone to severe seizures. One morning, after a bad one, (me and my brothers had to help hold her down) I was late for school. Since I had been late a few times that month for the same reason, my teacher decided that she was going to shame me in front of the entire class. She scornfully asked why I was late this time. I started to explain about my sister, but in my nervousness and terror, I said that my sister had fainted. I forgot the word "seizure." She immediately began to mock me and taunt me, saying, "Oh, sure, your sister fainted, your mother fainted, your father fainted..." The class had a good laugh at my expense. She was always scornful and hateful towards me, and I never understood why.

Another teacher, in fourth grade, asked the class to bring something in for show and tell. I had decided that I would be a writer, and naively thought that a writer had to make their own book. So I had put together a book made from cardboard and paper, with my story neatly printed and illustrated inside. Teacher caught me fiddling with my book while she was lecturing, so she asked me to bring whatever it was, to her. I waited for her to admire my book, but she just slammed it into a desk drawer. After school, she refused to give it back. For all I know, she tossed it into the rubbish. I think I still hate her for that.

Yes. Teachers generally took the fact that I never hesitated to give them a piece of my mind to also indicate that I was a morally corrupt, young man who was likely to lie to them and attack other adolescents. For my honesty and straightforwardness, I was treated and spoken to like some as*hole. Worse, I was forced to tolerate the abuse and taunting of students who had sports scholarships, and, when I questioned this highly dishonorable behavior, I was punished and put on suspension...strictly because I threatened the prestige of the school. The lives of people who abuse authority are worthless.

For the most part, I've been fairly lucky with teachers... I don't think I've ever had one that it'd call a 'bully', though I've had a few who were extremely strict/unreasonable (for instance, one who would sometimes refuse to give you work you had missed after an absense...). All in all, though, I haven't had many problems, and certainly none on a personal level.

Pfft. That's one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard of a teacher saying. I hate it when they try to discourage learning.
I hope you get to Australia soon! You should send that teacher a postcard.

Yes, I was bullied by some teachers. Especially gym teachers. Some seemed to be trying to befriend the more popular kids by joining them in bullying the less popular ones.

Some teachers punished me for refusing to fight back when I was bullied. The school accepted bullying, but being a passive victim was not allowed. The teacher would put me and my bully in a room together, say, "Go ahead, fight it out," and leave. Fortunately, the bully didn't fully take advantage of the situation. She prefered psychological torture to physical methods.

Other teachers called me the same names the other kids used. Other kids called me "slow poke" so the gym teachers called me that too. They seemed to think it was funny.

I also had teachers who explicitly let me know that they didn't like me. One tried to get me kicked out of the school for daydreaming during class.
