We went to see Robyn Hitchcock last night. I have loved him forever and a year.

I wondered something watching him on stage last night, though. He babbled on pretty nonsensically about seemingly unconnected things in between songs. My husband was completely confused by it, but liked it.

Then, when he came down to sign autographs (there was only about 150 people in the bar), he was okay when there was just one or two people interacting with him, but then when he got to the table, he kept saying things like, "Does anyone else need signing?" It seemed as if he just couldn't wait to get away from these people.

Then I asked him for a photo. He said he hated to take photographs and it wasn't personal. That was just the way he was. I was okay with it, it just put my brain to thinking, which was already acutely aware that the AS had been way over touched this night. So....my question is, does anyone know?

I just thought his skittishness was so characteristic of AS. The photo thing really threw me. I have heard other AS people say this sometimes, but it's more the idea that people tend to get close to them in the photos and/or the feeling of the fake cheese smile for photos. I often get this feeling. I'm acutely aware of having to fake smile for the camera to get a picture for the delay factor on the digital camera.

I just wondered. It was curious to me. But when I think about his quirky song lyrics and off the wall way of looking at the world, it just made sense.

I went and saw him a year ago at the Central Club Hotel. He does babble on but that's his charm (if you listen closely, it's often hilarious banter).

He was also willing to sign autographs (Peter Buck of REM fame was also there so I got two autographs, which was a nice little bonus) and stayed quite a while doing so.

It's nice that he's so approachable.

He was approachable. He was just painfully wanting to get out of there. I had seen him years ago and he was skittish then as well. And yes, I do love his babble, and it's horribly entertaining. But the skittishness really confused me. He's only personable in small groups and on stage. In a much larger group he seemed to be much less personable and really worried about how closely people were getting to him. This hads been my experience with him every time I've seen him.
