Has anyone ever been drawn to off-beat countries or city skylines? I sort of had an on and off obsession about Hong Kong when I was in high school because it was still a British colony and not under Communist China's control. I was also drawn to it because of its skyline. In fact I purchased a harcover book on Hong Kong which was part of the Great Cities series by Time-Life. I looked at that book over and over.

Then much later I had an on and off interest with the country of Djibouti and Djibouti City in the Horn of Africa. About 80% of this country is a barren desert with very little natural resources.

I also collected pictures of city skylines from newspapers and put them on my bedroom wall when I was in high school.

Still have this feeling. When that movie Syriana came out on DVD I saw the trailer of it and when I saw the scene of that man walking in the desert with the Dubai skyline in the background, that inspired me to rent the movie at Blockbuster.

I have a somewhat similar obsession. I obsess over the travel section in the Los Angeles times every Sunday trying to imagine I am the people in the advertisements. Most of them have skylines on the beach. Although, I am sure even some NTs are obsessed with skylines on the beach but probably not to the extent I am. I do know the feeling you have with city skylines though. They are sweet.

I have seen the skylines of philidelphia, and NYC, unfortunatly I have only seen them (without looking at the TV) during the day, quite impressive but I think I would still love to see what they look like at night.

This is a timely subject . . .

Just yesterday, my 21 year old stated that he wants to go on a study abroad group to London (and while there, will visit other countries), and my 11 year old has been bugging us about the fact that he thinks it's time we went to visit a foreign country.

I had an interest in the Ukraine, beginning in 1986 with the announcement of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. From then on, I wanted to find out everything about that country.

I have also been interested in Ethiopia and Kenya, probably because of the great runners that come from there.

I have had a long-standing interest in Greece.

I currently have an interest in Israel. It packs more than 3000 years of history in an area the size of New Jersey. At the same time, it has modern cities (with Tel Aviv being the biggest) with skyscrapers, bright lights, and modern technology, as well as historic downtowns. The blending of old and new is particularly striking in Jerusalem, where you have modern apartments inside 1000-year-old building structures, with building entrances facing narrow historic streets.

Kurt - Like you, I'm fascinated with Iceland. I think it's because the country has just about every type of land formation around. Volcanoes, beaches, hot springs, tundra, mountains... it has EVERYTHING. Plus, the people there are so isolated that they are completely unique. Sound familiar? I swear, I'm going to go there someday if it kills me!

I'm fascinated by unusual places. Dependent territories in particular. I, like you, used to have an obsession with Hong Kong. I used to watch many HK films in my youth and did my best to find out what life was like under the Union Jack. I have similar interests in places like Northern Ireland and Gibraltar.

Hmm.

I'll add a third mention of Iceland. I'm seriously planning on moving there someday, probably towards the tail end of the next 10 years or so.

I'm thinking of opening a Viking experience bed and breakfast there.

Good fortune,

I'm obsessed with Europe. I live in Israel, so for me it's quite easy to travel there. I go as often as I can.

Been to: Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, UK, Holland, a little Germany

Want to visit: Switzerland, Germany, Scandinavia, Austria, Eastern Europe, etc.

I also have this thing for borders and natural boundary zones between different climates and I am sure it must be along the same lines as skyscrapers and countries.

Example traveling to California to see where the desert ends and a wetter climate begins.

There is a state park in Virginia called First Landing State Park. It is the considered the northernmost boundary of where subtropical vegetation will grow.

Another place is that little tip in Louisiana on the lower Mississippi River Delta where the growing season is over 340 days.

To go down to Texas or California right to the Mexico border and take pictures or to go to Maine and take pictures of the International Border with Canada.

Going up into the mountains or heading north and seeing what happens as you get closer and closer to timberline. One of these days I promise, I am going to head up to Mount Washington, NH.
