Daylight Savings Time is when during the summer months we add one hour to the actual time. So if it is actually 4:00 pm, the clocks read 5:00 pm. The idea is so that there are more hours of usable daylight as the sun rises earlier. A lot of people attribute it to farmers, but farmers were actually against it. The actual reason is so that the hours of operation at factories (this is before electric lights, remember) could be extended. It was enacted during World War II last time to help with the war effort, and it's just been in effect ever since.
