I wonder if Asperger disorder can co-exist with Autistic disorder in the framework of the autistic spectrum in the same person.
Is extroverted behaviour characteristic of Asperger disorder while introverted behaviour is the characteristic of the other forms of autism spectrum? How can we diagnose the difference?

Intro- and extroversion are personality characteristics which are distinct from the diagnosis of AS or AD. AS and AD are seen as two distinct conditions that cannot coexist together in the same individual.

This is what the latest DSM says on the differences of AS and AD under the differential diagnosis section of Asperger's:

Quote:
Asperger's Disorder must be distinguished from the other Pervasive Developmental Disorder, all of which are characterized by problems in social interaction. It differs from Autistic Disorder in several ways. In Autistic Disorder there are, by definition, significant abnormalities in the areas of social interaction, language, and play, whereas in Asperger's Disorder early cognitive and language skills are not delayed significantly. Furthermore, in Autistic Disorder, restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped interests and activities are often characterized by the presence of motor mannerisms, preoccupation with parts of objects, rituals, and marked distress in change, whereas in Asperger's Disorder these are primarily observed in the all-encompassing pursuit of a circumscribed interest involving a topic to which the individual devotes inordinate amounts of time amassing information and facts. Differentiation of the two conditions can be problematic in some cases. In Autistic Disorder, typical social interaction patterns are marked by self-isolation or markedly rigid social approaches, whereas in Asperger's Disorder there may appear to be motivation for approaching others even though this is then done in a highly eccentric, one-sided, verbose, and insensitive manner.

There are introverted aspies and extroverted aspies. Anyone anywhere on the spectrum can show introverted or extroverted behaviour, or both depending on mood and situation.

I'm an extroverted aspie, who loves to give hugs to my friends.

I'm very introverted. But I love hugs. Though as i've gotten older i've stopped giving them to friends. they don't like them. makes them think i'm weird. I often got in trouble for hugging to hard when i was little. I did hurt quite a few people.

I'm not sure i understand the original question...

I think I would most likely qualify as extroverted...(but I don't like hugs from people I am not comfortable with)

I can really socially freeze up around many people, where I find it impossible to interract with them personally in a functional way....But I do end up interracting with alot of people on a regular basis...(though not really on a personal level)...and once I get past certain mental barriers I have against interracting on a personal basis with certain individuals, it gets alot easier...I get used to them..they get used to me....Though this seems to be off the original topic of the thread...I have been meaning to start an "introverted or extroverted?" thread for a while...

Out of curiosity, would the dividing factor portrayed in your question reveal a detestable aspie vs. a non detestable one in either your eyes or the eyes of society hence wishing to cut through the two like a bad half of a picture with someone you dislike and wish to throw away?

I'm a site specific extrovert. The rest of the time I'm an introvert. On the Myers-Brigg test, I scored ENFJ, but as far as the Extroversion goes, I only scored about 4 points (really low); so it's easy for me to switch between the two.
