i'm an independent comic artist with Hyperlexia and i'm putting together scripts for my first major series. one of the things i want to talk about is Asperger's.

my idea is that my main character (who's essentially me) gets diagnosed with Asperger's. he gets depressed about it at first, but the more he learns about it the better he feels. then he notices another girl acting like a b***h, but she blames it on her Asperger's. he calls her out on it and the moral of the story is "having Asperger's doesn't make you an as*hole, being an as*hole makes your an as*hole."

the whole thing was inspired by my own HFA and that girl from America's Next Top Model. the two big cases of Asperger's i've seen amongst stars is her and the guy from The Vines, two people who basically act like asses in public. and people think that's what it's like when you have HFA! i want to do something with my work that says that's not the case.

i wanted to get your thoughts though.

I think you're right. Being an as*hole makes you an as*hole.

At my house, we have me an unofficially dxed AS kid and my 16 year old son who is officially diagnosed. We've never looked at the AS as a reason to behave inappropriately. However, there are times when we behave inappropriately because of the AS. It's not an excuse.

I think that there is great responsiblity in having this label. In the midst of all of the issues associated with the AS, I think it's important to have a very finely tuned sense of humour. If you can't laugh at yourself, then you're doing it wrong. I'm the first one to jump up in the middle of a meltdown and say, "well, that was an autistic moment". I realise that my stuff looks weird to other people, but that's just the way I am. I'm not going to change (god forbid). I don't see any reason to be all abrasive and nasty about it. I find that being more accepting of who and what I am helps others to do the same.

I think you have a great idea! I would love to see this when you get it done. Do us justice and don't screw it up. LOL.

I think a set of comics all about Aspies, like Archie comics, would be really good... it would probably be fun for both NTs and AS to read and I can see this becoming very popular and turning into a million-dollar enterprise!

Asphole - a person who uses Asperger's Syndrome as an excuse for being a bastard.

this is a great idea, it would probably help some kids explain it better to their friends if they chose to tell them.
i hope it works out.

in a humorous way i'm hoping. one of my favorite things to do is take subjects that would be fitting for an After-School Special and then put them on their ears. the big thing i wanna emphasize is that though i have HFA i don't need sympathy nor do i want it, cause i'm doing just fine.
