Well, I was just diagnosed with Aspergers back in May, and I'm still trying to wrap my brain around it.

Don't get me wrong, I've read up on it quite a bit and found quite a bit of information about Aspergers, but I feel like as if I'm still learning. Just today, for instance, I read up that other people with Aspergers tend to call themselves "Aspies". I thought it was funny at first, but I guess it sounds better than being called an "Asperger" (kinda sounds like there's burgers on... um... yeah, I'll keep it clean. Hehe).

Anyhow, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I've got some floating around in my head. For instance, how do other aspies deal with their Aspergers? Also, what are the differences between Aspergers and High Functioning Autism (from what I read, they appear identical)? And since when did Aspergers become a disability (I base this question on the fact that I'm still able to work, of course).

A few thoughts had been floating through my head recently as well. For instance, has anybody else considered that Asperger's and HFA might be the next evolutionary stage in humanity? After all, certain emotions can be a hindrance at times (ie. Jealousy, hatred, revenge, etc).

I'm just addressing the evolution question, since I feel like I can't tell you how to cope - it's different for everybody. Evolution isn't something that randomly happens until everyone has Asperger's. The way it would work was that some people would be randomly born with it, and it would be so advantageous to them that they would produce more children than the average person, some of whom would inherit AS, and then have more kids, etc. Like, an example would be giraffes evolving from some gazelle-like animal. One is born randomly with a slightly taller neck - it's very advantageous because it can reach higher branches and probably survive longer and be healthier - so it has more of a chance to reproduce. Over time, these animals keep passing down the mutated gene because it gives them an advantage, and they're more likely to survive and reproduce, until eventually these animals become a new species. With AS, your symptoms would have to mean you were more likely to survive and thrive - it doesn't seem like AS increases people's number of mates in general lol. In a modernized world we might survive better - we tend to be brighter and more focused than the average person who might do more stupid things or not have as much job success - but in a modernized world, thanks to birth control and the fact that women no longer base their mates on physical characteristics or ablility to provide (necessarily), it doesn't really increase your chance of having more children to spread AS around. I hope that makes sense. Sometimes it bugs me when people go on about evolution, because humans have in many ways stopped it because we don't have a lot of kids and we help the less advantaged who woudl have died out before. That's depressing, lol.

Every day my life gets a little worse, as it slowly becomes a pit of despair, loneliness, and black stuff. Lets call it barf.

Welcome here, Tilkor. Autism and AS are a spectrum, with a marvelous variety of demographics, skill levels, and attitudes to life represented thereon. WP is a diverse place; have fun exploring. :)

So far, having fun with this place. Like the name of the place. Humorous, in a metaphoric sort of way. Sometimes I feel like as if I'm on the wrong planet at times, or is it everybody else? Hard to tell at times. Hehe.
