What percentage of autistic specrtum chidren remain completely mute as grown ups? My 4.5 year old only babbles. He pulls us to the things he wants.

He babbles? That's a hopeful beginning to speech.

I heard stories of people speaking VERY late. By some accounts, Einstien didn't speak until he was FOUR! The average child speaks with about 50% clarity by 2! BTW if he LEADS you to what he wants, then he clear knew, decided, figured out how to lead you, and acted on it. So you have to wonder WHY he isn't speaking. Maybe if you asked him to speak, and were less willing to move, he would talk.

I tried to find a decent source, but I didn't find one. There exist a statement that claims that about 50 per cent of all on the autistic spectrum are nonverbal, which also seems to include children. However, I failed at finding a source that verifies this. It's too bad that there aren't any decent studies about this.

Are you asking this question because your son doesn't talk yet? He's still very young and I don't think anyone can predict what his language skills will be like in ten years. Just keep teaching him, try out lots of new things and see how he reacts to it, because it's always different things for different kids.

Zukenkerl, I think hundreds of people told me that if I insisted my non-verbal daughter talk, that she would. She's thirty years old now and only vocalizes groans. I'm a llittle sensitive about that advice.

I was a mute for soo long, didn't start speaking in correct sentences until i was 8, my parents were desperate for me to speak, now all they want is to shut me up haha.
