I was just listening to some music I hadn't heard in a while, and realised how pertinent these lyrics could be to some of you guys on here. They always made me feel so much stronger and are so encouraging, so thought I'd post them!

John Butler Trio - Zebra

I could be loud man, I could be silent
I could be young man or I could be old
I could be a gentleman or I could be violent
I could turn hot man or I could be cold
I could be just like the calm before the storm boy waiting for all hell (yeah) to break loose
I could be innocent or I can be guilty
Doesn't meant that I, boy, believe in no noose

I could be rich like a wandering gypsy
I could be poor like a fat wallet lost
I could be first man or I could come last
It's not who breaks the ribbon, boy, it's how you get across
I could be red - blue - black and white - sunset, dark as the day, boy, or bright as the night
I could be the sun man or I could be the moon
I'm made up from the stars yeah I'm shining so bright!

I could be asleep man or I could be awake
I could be alive man or be the walking dead
I could be ignorant or I could be informed
I could lead my life man or I could be led
I can be anything I put my mind to boy all I gotta do is give myself a half a chance
I could bring love back into my life
Share it with the world if I got some balance!

Watch for the spoon solo at the 3min mark ;)

Saw them live at a secret gig in Wellington a few years ago... best thing I've ever seen, only 100 people there, and him just a metre away. One of the best guitarists, lyricists and environmentalists Australia has produced in years.

Most "environmentalists" are woefully ignorant. Don't like them.

Ignorant of anything in particularly? Or just ignorant because they are environmentalists.

I find the lack of tolerance to others and broad generalisations based on who knows what on this site both ironic and sad.

All people who make gross generalisations are nitwits.

Heh, I'm a bit of an enviromentalist and hate global warming deniers with a passion and I agree with you. IMO a lot of self-proclaimed "enviromentalists" are really New Age luddite romanticists (that think us biotech majors are agents of evil) and/or upper-middle class yuppies on guilt trips that do feel-good that ultimately doesn't really help anything except to free themselves of their guilt.

John Butler is a very outspoken anti-capitalist musician. He writes about issues that affect Australia in particular (mining, capitalism and consumerism, nuclear issues, govt policy, deforestation, indigenous rights, and of course equal rights and empowering people through music, as in Zebra etc etc) and prefers to deal with things in a very grass-roots way. If you read his lyrics you'll see there's a lot of wisdom in what he says... his forums on his website are incredible; full of pro-active people looking for ways to change things from the bottom up. At least they were a few years ago, may have changed now but I don't expect so. He's brilliant anyway.

Anyway, environmentalism wasn't the point of this thread. I just wanted to show you the lyrics which have got me through so many hard times in the past - they're brilliant and empowering, and the song is amazing...

Any guitar buffs look at what he's playing - one of only 3 in the world, custom-made... he's about the best guitarist in Australia, genius style of playing.
