I accidentally shoplifted (technically) a chopping board from the supermarket the otherday. It was see through, and I had leaned it on the trolley. I only noticed it when I was loading up my car. I went back to the store and told them and paid.

What would you have done?

Ooh if it was see-through id defo no pay, are they better than the wooden ones? Im moving soon so would be glad to know. To answer your question seriously, i would have walked away without paying as i see it as taking from the rich to give to the poor. Me. :D

If I was on my own I would have gone back to pay. If something like that happens when my partner is with me he usually gives me stern looks and elbow nudges and shoves me out the door...

It was a glass one. The wooden ones get scratched and carry dirt easily. The glass ones don't scratch and are easy to wipe clean.

wooyay, that chopping board was a gift from GOD! you have insulted His divine will by going back to pay for it!

no, i wouldn't have gone back to pay for it. having worked in retail for five years, i know that staff are paid low wages to cover for stock losses (theft and damage). paying for things will not change their salaries- it just increases the profits of those at the top of the company, unfortunately.

i'm not very good at talking to people at the best of times so if that had happened to me, and i'd decided to return and pay for the item, i would've struggled to explain what happened and tripped over my words while everyone stared at me, thinking that i was a nutter. and i'd be worse off (financially) for my efforts too.

I would have paid.

The same as when people give me too much change back, I always point it out and return the difference.

Probably makes me a sucker, but I don't care. I can't help it, being dishonest is just wrong. I don't really care about the shop going short, I just feel I need to have standards and that's one of them.

Equally I'd hope shop staff would alert me if I've been short changed or left something on the counter...

For that I am usually too confused 9with packing, noise, lights etc.) to be able to count my change - I'd only notice they gave me too much if it was obvious, i.e. I give them a £20 and they give me a £20 back.

I'd go back but I wouln't pay unless I meant to buy it originally; if it was an accident I'd just return it.

People often undercharge me for things too.

When you tell them they have undercharged you, they look at you for a while trying to figure out what you just said (they always assume you said "overcharged"), once they figure it out they get all flumoxed.

Last time I did this the guy undercharged me, I told him, then he proceeded to overcharge me. I was getting fed up at this point so to save my own time just left the shop.

Same here. And when it's those kind of amounts that you're getting back it would feel twice as bad to me not to say anything.

I've probably been overcharged/undercharged countless times and not noticed! But when I do notice, I try to be honest!

I have done this a couple times before over the years and I would usually go back and pay unless the item were INCREDIBLY cheap and I was really in a rush to get elsewhere or some other complicating factor. I usually give back change, too, if they cashier's given me too much and I realize it.

But then again, I must be honest, I have stolen some things before. But I like to put that period behind me... high school. And I was talked into it and got in a temporary habit by some fellow students after seeing many times how easy it was. Of course, I was a nerdy thief and stole some books instead of clothes like all the rest of them did. Eh. But truly not the most noble memories I have of myself. :?

Thankfully I've grown out of that. I've become an upstanding forthright citizen once again, YAY!

Honest, to a fault. I can keep secrets, but I will not lie to keep it secret.

Yesterday, a lady dropped about 6 dollars without knowing it, and I returned it to them imediately.

I don't know. I would want to return something accidentally stolen, and would feel really bad if I did not. However, I would also be really uncomfortable going back as I wouldn't know who to talk to or what I'd have to say and what they would say back in reply.

I've had at least one occasion when I've tried to give back excess change but where somehow I couldn't explain the problem to the other person and gave up trying. In general, I tend to avoid 'novel' interactions with people I don't know...

I once stole a yoda figure when I was 7. I was dead guilty and my mom told me off and it made me cry. NEVER AGAIN. The only thing I have any taken was a couple of books from the school library....and not returned them. I AM GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL....
