Weird Thing With Words

I was wondering if anyone else is like me with words.If I am given a word then a choice of what it means like in www.Freerice.com then I can tell what the word means just by saying it. Some words I use the roots, like Latin or Greek, and work it out from there.But there are others that I have never seen before, and when I say them, I instantly know what they mean.
Is anyone else like this?

There are many words that have parts that can be identified. Prefixes like un, in, inter, exo, anti,etc. are more or less standard. And parts like anthro, man, etc. refer to humans, but this can be deceptive. "Manic" does not refer to humans and both flammable and inflammable means the same thing. Usage can change the meaning of a word.

That's a pretty cool site. I tried it for about 10 min. and peaked at 34.

I answered until I noticed got one wrong(the 1st 10 words or so I didn't notice it was telling me they were right or wrong, and I guessed on about 30% of them).

I love that site! :D I've been on it a few times, and I agree that it is easier when you know the roots of the words. And my peak level just now was 42. :)

Regarding my original post, I didn't quite mean that.While for some words I do use the root,others I know without knowing why. For example one of the words was "tortuous" which I had never seen before.When someone asked me how I knew it meant "winding", the only answer I had was that it "sounded windy"

Alot of words I've never heard of can be 'gamed' through vocabularimathematics. Silage... starts with 'sil' like silo, one of the options is fodder (food), food's stored in a silo, so voila.

The 'process of elimination' is a useful tool, as well. I'm very good at Millionaire, but can't play Jeopardy, to save my life.

I peaked at 45 quite quickly (the knowledge of french helped somewhat though), but couldnt get any higher. Despite this my spoken vocabulary is appalling and my written vocabulary is not as good as it should be given the amount of reading I do.

I love that site! Forgot exactly what my vocab level was , but I got to donate approximately 3,200 bags of rice. I could've stayed on for hours - I love words and have always read voraciously from childhood. There were some words that I wasn't aware I knew the meanings of!
