I don't know why, but I have huge problems remembering, retaining, and relaying messages to other people. Even if said message or instructions were around 30 seconds ago. They just fall out of my head sometimes. Its incredibly frustrating because people get extremely angry with me over this... I don't know whether it has anything to do with autism or not, or whether I'm just as lazy, pathetic and dumb as people tell me I am. Is this a real symptom?! What's wrong with my brain? :(
It's really starting to get to me because it feels like I'm being screamed at right left and center... I just want to hide in my room and never emerge from it again, and not bother with life, just become a hermit.

That happens to me sometimes.

For me, I think it might be due to me feeling overloaded in a social situation. I need someone to come with me to remember important information, because I won't remember any of it.

I have some short term memory problems myself. It helps me to write things down.

I have the same problem; I'm very forgetful. If I have no way to get a written message to the person right away, I use the voice recorder function on my mp3 player to leave notes for myself- it's easier for me to remember to check that than remember and find a note I have written down.

Like others have said writing things down may be a good idea! Also, here is something that I do when I have something important to remember, that works very well for me: as soon as someone tells you something, concentrate on it fully and repeat it over in your mind about 10-15 times (maybe more or less depending on how much success you have trying it). Also after you do that perhaps try continually trying to recall the information (ex.: 15 minutes later, try to remember it...then 1hr later, try to recall it again). I can't attest that this will work for you, but for me this strategy helps a ton when I need to remember specific information.

Point from which I may relate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crBIa_DmRt8

When I get into "savant" trances I sometimes have difficulty transitioning back to normal reality. When they first started happening I wrote stuff down obsessively.

the OP might consider carrying around one of those little memo recorders around, record whatever is said and play it back in front of the appropriate person. "a man's gotta know his limitations."

The best offence is a good defence, as it were...I agree, carry a pad and pen around with you. At my last job, when I started I had small pad in my front pocket, where I could feel it, so whenever someone asked be to do something I could feel it ans whip it out. I also had cheet sheets on my desk describing the ins and outs of every single minute task around the office, from how to use our software to how to sort the mail! My collegues thought it was very silly, but it helped me.

Have a sit down and see if you can come up with some tactics to help your sitch.
